Tavares: "In ten years, energy storage density in EV batteries will double"

Advances in the chemical composition of traction batteries will make them more compact and lighter according to Tavares

The issues of electrification of the global vehicle fleet were discussed earlier this week during a special event by the CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares and the CEO of the Maserati brand, Davide Grasso. The first of these said that it would take five to ten years to double the density of electricity storage in electric vehicle batteries. In the current generation of electric vehicles, however, this will not be possible.

Tavares believes that within 10 years, EV batteries will make huge progress

Advances in battery chemistry will make batteries more compact and lighter, which is important for the very sporty cars Maserati intends to produce. At the same time, the electric vehicles' range will increase and charging times will be reduced. The automaker's representatives also added that there is a demand for environmental friendliness among the targeted consumers of expensive sports cars, so high-performance electric cars will be in demand.

The carmaker currently produces 100 car models of various brands, by 2030 it intends to offer 75 all-electric models. In Europe, Stellantis' product portfolio will be 100% electric by 2030 and in the United States it will reach 50% by the same date. Maserati will make sure to offer each of the new models in electric version by 2025, as previously mentioned. By the end of the decade, the company expects to sell 5 million electric vehicles annually.

Tavares believes that within 10 years, EV batteries will double storage density and guarantee greater autonomy and faster charging speeds. At the same time, Carlos Tavares notes that for the development of electric vehicles to be successful, should be available to middle-class buyers. If the middle class is excluded from buying them, electric vehicles can never have decent sales.. At the same time, Maserati will remain a premium brand, as its representatives are not ready to sacrifice quality for the sake of volume.

The brand's first electric car will be the GranTurismo Folgore coupe, which will be launched by September 2023, followed by the Grecale crossover. Since the Folgore will also be offered in a hybrid version, the manufacturer expects the all-electric version to account for up to 30% of sales. So we'll see if Carlos Tavares' predictions come true.
