Nissan X-Trail e-4ORCE Moon Trail Project : The ideal car for the moon

Nissan

In a pioneering project codenamed "e-4ORCE Moon Trail", Nissan, in collaboration with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), has taken an X-Trail e-4ORCE to Miyake-Jima Island, where the surface of the ground resembles that of the Moon. There, Nissan demonstrated how an X-Trail with e-4ORCE all-wheel drive technology can deliver stable, predictable traction, quietness and cabin comfort in a variety of driving conditions, on and off the planet.

In addition to Nissan's commercial models, e-4ORCE technology is used by JAXA to control the propulsion power of the lunar rover. By leveraging this partnership with JAXA, Nissan has demonstrated how effective the X-Trail is in extreme environments such as the surface of the moon on one of the islands south of Japan.

e-4ORCE: a strong and smooth scrolling

The innovative e-4ORCE all-wheel drive system is designed for use with either Nissan's all-electric powertrains or the innovative e-POWER system. In both cases, the wheels are driven solely by battery-powered electric motors.

In the case of the X-Trail, the dual electric motor system has a total output of 157 kW (213 PS) with a 150 kW front motor and a 100 kW rear motor. This creates a dynamic acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 7 seconds. It has 10,000 times faster rear torque response than a mechanical 4WD system.

The Ariya e-4ORCE has a total system power of 225 kW (306 hp). This delivers a thrilling acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Both vehicles offer confident driving and responsive handling in all conditions, allowing for a powerful yet smooth driving experience.

e-4ORCE: Superior control and intuitive handling

The e-4ORCE system uses the battery to power a dual motor system evenly distributed on each axle for independent wheel control. With the e-4ORCE system engaged, drivers easily follow the intended turn line with minimal steering correction, allowing them to feel the power of the EV and enjoy the "electrified" handling experience.

The e-4ORCE technology provides continuous, balanced chassis control, line detection and steering accuracy to predict driver behaviour and compensate for common responses such as understeer, maintaining balance in the cabin for a more enjoyable in-car experience.

e-4ORCE: confidence in all surface conditions

With e-4ORCE, torque is distributed front and rear to maximise tyre grip, depending on road conditions and vehicle condition, while braking is controlled separately for each of the four wheels.

Thanks to this precise control of the dual-motor system and vector braking torque capabilities, the vehicle maintains the right course, whether the road is wet - slippery or covered in snow. The key to the vehicle's balance on the road is the balanced power distribution from the dual motor system, which can be set to 1/10000th of a second.ο of a second, much faster than traditional four-wheel drive systems.

e-4ORCE: Immersion control for comfortable journeys for all passengers

An additional advantage of the e-4ORCE for all passengers is the comfortable ride, with minimal longitudinal body roll under deceleration, thanks to the powerful regenerative braking. The "dive" effect is suppressed by controlling the regenerative balance between the front and rear axles. In addition, the dual motor system means a greater level of regenerative energy "capture" than a single motor system, optimising vehicle performance at every opportunity.

The launch of e-4ORCE is an important step in Nissan's electrification journey towards a cleaner, safer and more inclusive world.
