Η Volkswagen requested that the implementation of the new EU emission standards at least until autumn 2026, a little more than a year later than planned, with the aim of all new cars meeting the standards by autumn 2027.
VW could meet that timetable provided the law comes into force in mid-2024, giving carmakers two years to start implementing the planned standards and three years to cover their entire new fleet, Volkswagen said in a position paper.
European Union countries and lawmakers will this year negotiate the Euro 7 proposals for stricter limits for car and heavy-duty truck and bus emissions, including nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide.
European car manufacturers are resisting the proposed emissions regulations, which they say are too costly and impossible to implement with the speed the European Commission expects.
However, the Commission argues that measures are needed as soon as possible to reduce harmful emissions while internal combustion engine cars remain on the roads.
The expectation that the new rules would be implemented from July 2025 would lead to a halt in production of many models for many months across Europe, VW said in its position paper on Thursday.
Other aspects of the regulation, such as restrictions on tiny particles from braking and tyre wear, will have to be delayed, Volkswagen said, without giving a date.
"Several years of preparation are needed," the statement said, noting the lack of suppliers or industrial production of tyres to meet the new requirements.
