Nissan e.dams on the podium at the Formula E race in Mexico

Super Pole winner Oliver Rowland finishes third in the new E-Prix in Puebla, Mexico

The Nissan e.dams team competed in last weekend's exciting ABB FIA Formula E World Championship at the Mexico E-Prix, with #22 LEAF driver Oliver Rowland winning Super Pole and finishing third in an action-packed double-header at the new Autodromo Miguel E. Abed.

Rowland took an early lead in round nine of the 2020-21 electric series, but his aggressive, early Attack Mode strategy wasn't enough to secure the lead. He ultimately finished fourth in the race, but Werhlein received a five-second penalty for improper use of FanBoost, which "bumped" Rowland up to third.

Nissan is competing in this world championship to bring the excitement and enjoyment of driving zero-emission electric vehicles to a global audience. As part of its goal to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations and product lifecycle by 2050, Nissan intends to "electrify" its upcoming models by the early 2030s. Nissan is targeting the benefits derived from its experience in electrification and the transfer of knowledge and technology between racing and everyday road conditions to deliver better electric vehicles to the consumer audience.

"Overall, we need to focus on the positives of the weekend," said Tommaso Volpe, Nissan's global motorsport director. "We came back with a stronger pace compared to the first half of the season. We were at the top in free practice and in qualifying we were in P2 and pole position. We know the car is fast and has improved a lot. It is disappointing that yesterday (Saturday 19 June 2021) we were disqualified for a procedural technical issue by the FIA. Today (Sunday 20 June 2021) we started on pole position, but the P3 results show that while we have regained pace in the race, we are still not at the top. Unfortunately, Sebastien didn't have the confidence he needed all weekend. We need to improve further."

The Formula E championship will continue in New York for rounds 10 and 11 on July 10 and 11 respectively.

Nissan is a pioneer in electric mobility in Mexico. The Nissan LEAF was launched in Mexico in 2014 and became the first mass-produced pure electric vehicle in the country, with the launch of the second-generation LEAF taking place in 2018, to great success. Recently, Nissan reached the milestone of 700 charging stations across the country, both in public locations and across its dealer network, forging the foundation for a new era of mobility.

A new period of sustainable growth begins for Nissan as it implements its Nissan NEXT transformation plan, accelerating the journey towards an all-electric range in Europe from fiscal 2023, with the launch of both the Ariya all-electric crossover and the Qashqai e-Power being the first steps.
