In 2021, the BMW Group recorded strong sales growth (+8.4%) compared to 2020, with total global deliveries of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles reaching 2,521,525 units. BMW sales reached historic levels with 2,213,795 units (+9.1%) last year, with the brand leading the luxury vehicle category worldwide. The company more than doubled its all-electric vehicle sales in 2021, reaching 103,855 units (+133.2%).
"Despite the problems in the supply chain and the ongoing pandemic: We achieved strong sales results in 2021, thanks to our excellent operational performance and excellent product range. Our brands in many cases achieved the best results in their history on a global level - with the BMW brand spearheading the way, taking the lead in the luxury vehicle category worldwide," said Pieter Nota, BMW AG Board Member responsible for Customers, Brands and Sales. "With more than 100,000 pure electric vehicles sold last year, our clear goal was to intensify our efforts in the field of electrification," Nota continued.
The BMW Group is well positioned to continue profitable growth in 2022
The company is optimistic about the current year. "In 2022 we want to continue our profitable growth and will systematically expand our range of pure electric vehicles. We have set highly ambitious growth targets in this area and intend to more than double sales of pure electric vehicles from last year," Nota added.
The systematic digitisation of the customer interface as a success factor for future sales
With the introduction of the BMW iX and BMW i4, the BMW Group has significantly expanded the digitalisation of the customer interface.
For example, in addition to its user-friendly character to simplify the purchasing process, pre-configured new vehicles and more recently used cars across the entire range can already be purchased online on the BMW Group's domestic market in Germany. By 2025, the Group plans to sell a quarter of its vehicles exclusively online.
Data-driven service requirement identification enhances proactive customer support. This means that direct contact can be made with the customer who receives support remotely where possible, or a visit to the workshop can be arranged easily and efficiently if necessary.
The new My BMW/MINI app offers even more features such as 'booking' digital services or broad access to charging options, and creates a direct communication channel with customers.
The sales BMW have surpassed the historic pre-crisis highs of 2020
The BMW brand ended 2021 with a positive global sales figure of +9.1% (2,213,795 vehicles) compared to the previous year. Thanks to its young and attractive product range, BMW recorded the highest sales figures in its history.
In 2021 the trend towards electrification dominated
In 2021, 13% of BMW and MINI vehicles sold worldwide - a total of 328,316 units (+70.4 %) - were electric. In Europe this figure was already over 23% (225,415 units).
With 37,939 BMW iX3s sold in 2021, about one in ten BMW X3s delivered to customers worldwide were all-electric. In the same period, one in three customers who bought a 3-door MINI model opted for the all-electric version (34,851 units). At the same time, the BMW i3, the only all-electric car in the compact segment, maintained its upward trend for the ninth year: With 28,216 units, the BMW i3 increased its sales by 5.4% compared to the previous year's results.
Last year the BMW Group launched two innovative technological flagships, the BMW iX and the BMW i4. In 2022, the company will further expand its range of electric vehicles with all-electric versions of the BMW 7 Series and BMW X1 and, in 2023, the BMW 5 Series, a high-volume selling model. These will be joined by other models such as the successor to the MINI Countryman and the all-electric Rolls-Royce Spectre.
By 2023, the BMW Group will have at least one all-electric model in its 90% of almost all of its existing categories. For the next decade, the company plans to sell around ten million pure electric vehicles.
The Neue Klasse, which is clearly geared towards all-electric versions, will make a significant contribution to the BMW Group's sales volumes from the middle of the decade onwards.
The MINI brand's product range will be all-electric by the early 2030s, while Rolls-Royce will also be an all-electric brand from 2030 onwards. All future new BMW Motorrad models in the urban mobility segment will be all-electric.
Another milestone in its history BMW M Ltd.
With total deliveries of 163,542 M vehicles (+13.4%), BMW M GmbH again set an all-time sales record in the performance and high-performance vehicle categories. The new BMW M3 and BMW M4 were particularly successful. Sales of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M Sports Activity Vehicles were also up on the previous year. In the performance model segment, the rise was mainly driven by the new 4 Series - and in particular the 4 Series Coupé. The X3 M40i and X7 M50i also enjoyed increasing popularity. This year, the all-electric BMW iX M60 and BMW i4 M50 will further contribute to the future success of the brand.
One in ten customers MINI around the world already drives an all-electric model
MINI delivered 302,144 vehicles last year - +3.3% compared to 2020. Around 17% of these were electrified. More than one in ten MINI customers chose the all-electric MINI: the MINI Cooper SE (34,851 units). The MINI Electric is the MINI family model with the highest sales volume and acted as a driving force for the brand in 2021, achieving an increase of 98.2%. With a planned realignment of the model range, expansion of production capacity and development of new target groups and markets, the MINI strategy will remain focused on successful profitable growth in the future.
Η Rolls – Royce Engine Cars recorded the most sales in its history
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars reported the highest global sales figure in the brand's 117-year history, with 5,586 units (+48.7%). This total includes all-time sales records in most regions including, Greater China, the US and the Asia-Pacific region, as well as in many countries around the world. Last year saw strong global demand for all models, particularly the Ghost and Cullinan and all Black Badge variants, with existing orders stretching through the third quarter of 2022. Orders for special editions reached record levels and the company announced, along with the launch of the Boat Tail, that Rolls-Royce Coachbuild will become an integral part of its future portfolio. The brand continues to evolve as a genuine luxury vehicle house and is now preparing for the historic launch of its first, all-electric model, Spectre, in the final quarter of 2023.
2021: The best year ever for BMW Motorcycle
With deliveries of 194,261 units (+14.8%), 2021 was the best year in BMW Motorrad's history. As in previous years, sales growth was secured by the BMW 1250 GS, which once again made a substantial contribution to the brand's success in 2021 with around 60,000 units. The new BMW R 1250 RT got off to a good start on the market, as did the larger R 18 models, with the introduction of four versions so far. The new S 1000 R has also been extremely well received: Together with the first BMW M model for BMW Motorrad, it brought fresh energy to the four-cylinder motorcycle scene and demonstrated BMW Motorrad's technological superiority.
