Ford today unveiled the new Fiesta for the first time, featuring dynamic new styling and an upgraded technology package, powered by advanced, mild hybrid powertrains that make the company's new compact hatchback more future-ready than ever.
Bold and distinctive exterior surfaces take the expressive design of the Fiesta to a new level, with a more pronounced presence on the road and greater differentiation between versions of the full range. Trend, Titanium, ST-Line and Active trims offer unique styling elements combined with an extensive range of exterior colours, wheel designs and interior finishes. The Fiesta family is also extended with new Vignale packages that enhance the personality of the Titanium, ST-Line and Active trims with luxury equipment beyond the high specification of the X trims.
Equipped with the latest generation of technologies, the new Fiesta is perfectly prepared for smart, connected, driving experiences. LED headlamps are introduced for the first time on all Fiesta trims, with advanced Matrix LED technology available and including Glare-Free High Beam function that can adjust beam patterns for better visibility in challenging conditions.
The new Fiesta also introduces a new 12.3" digital display with driving information for relaxed journeys. Local Hazard Information and Wrong-Way Alert systems debut in Fiesta as part of Ford's suite of advanced driver assistance technologies.
The new Fiesta's electrified powertrains save fuel and reduce emissions while maximising driving pleasure. Ford EcoBoost Hybrid 48-volt mild hybrid technology helps optimise fuel consumption and at the same time enhances Fiesta's renowned dynamic handling by offering instant acceleration. The technology works with Ford's seven-speed Powershift automatic transmission for quick, smooth gear changes and a comfortable and confident Fiesta experience.
Ford has also today revealed the new Fiesta ST developed by Ford Performance. The hot hatchback promises an upgraded experience with new Matrix LED headlights, new company-developed Performance Seats and sporty design details - which include a new Chrystaline Grey front grille and stunning Mean Green exterior paint - as well as 10% increased maximum torque that now reaches 320Nm.
"Adapting to the new demands of the times by setting new standards of driving pleasure, technology and performance has contributed greatly to the enduring success of Fiesta," said Roelant de Waard, general manager, Passenger Vehicles, Ford Europe. "The new Fiesta is another leap forward for the small segment and is a model suitable for all lifestyles."
Fresh design, more personality
The new Fiesta is based on Ford's proven B-Class architecture - also used in the Ford Puma compact SUV - and will be available in practical and quality three- and five-door versions, so every customer gets a Fiesta with the character to suit their lifestyle.
The new exterior design across the range includes a bonnet that increases the height of the nose, combined with larger upper grilles. Ford's blue oval badge is now inside the grille rather than on the hood lip, making it more striking on the road.
The new standard LED headlights also contribute to the confident and contemporary design language of the new Fiesta, with a sleek horizontal design. At the rear, the standard headlights get new black bezels for a more sophisticated look, while the optional LED taillights are complemented by a Premium Black exterior finish.
Each version of the new Fiesta has a different personality with unique front and grille designs and distinctive exterior and interior design elements that express their individual character.
The Trend and Titanium versions have a wide upper grille with horizontal lines and a high-gloss chrome frame with pronounced side vents. The Titanium version also features chrome horizontal bars on the upper grille, which "blend" with the chrome window frames.
The Ford Performance-inspired ST-Line version offers a sportier character and is recognisable by its new upper grille with a deeper insert section and honeycomb design with a gloss black finish. The wide side vents are painted in body colour, while a larger lower grille enhances the dynamic look.
The Active version, inspired by the SUV models, stands out with its more rugged features that betray an adventurous look. A wide upper grille features strong vertical lines with a gloss black finish, with taller and more pronounced side vents that reference the crossover philosophy of this version.
Seven new alloy wheel designs complete the car's bold new design, while two new exterior colours - Boundless Blue and Beautiful Berry - are also available.
For even more advanced styling and hints of exclusivity, Vignale packages are available for Titanium, ST-Line and Active versions, including exclusive 17" and 18" alloy wheels, Sensico luxury seat trim and interior trim with matte carbon fibre appearance, depending on the version.
"The Fiesta is a small car with real personality. Its enjoyable driving character and quality have always been expressed through its style," said Amko Leenarts, director, Design, Ford Europe. "With our new Fiesta we have created even more distinctive characters for each Fiesta version, so our customers can choose the one that reflects their personal style and lifestyle."
Drive systems for the present and the future
The new Fiesta offers driving experiences with quiet and efficient operation and responsive performance, supported by the mild 48-volt EcoBoost Hybrid 48-volt hybrid technology and EcoBoost petrol engines.
Designed to reduce operating costs while enhancing the driving pleasure factor as a central element of the car's appeal, EcoBoost Hybrid models have an integrated belt-driven starter/generator (BISG) in place of the standard alternator. This allows energy normally lost during braking and rolling to be recovered and stored in a 48-volt air-cooled lithium-ion battery.
The BISG system also acts as a motor by continuously cooperating with the engine, using the stored energy both to provide additional torque under normal driving and acceleration conditions and to operate the vehicle's peripheral electrical systems. The technology can restart the engine at 350 milliseconds, allowing the Auto Start-Stop system to turn off the engine in situations such as when the vehicle is rolling to a stop at speeds below 25 km/h even with the gearbox in gear and the clutch pedal depressed, for greater fuel economy.
The 1.0L EcoBoost Hybrid engine in the new Fiesta is available in 125 and 155 hp versions, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Fuel consumption is from 4.9 l/100 km and CO2 by 111 g/km (according to WLTP) representing a 5% improvement compared to a non-hybrid 1.0L EcoBoost engine delivering 125 hp. According to Ford data, hybrid versions are able to deliver up to 10% increased fuel economy in urban driving conditions compared to those powered by a 1.0L EcoBoost non-hybrid engine.
The 125 hp EcoBoost Hybrid engine is also available with a seven-speed, dual-clutch Powershift automatic transmission, which offers smooth gear changes for optimum ride quality. This combination ensures fuel consumption of 5.2 l/100 km and CO2 from 117 g/km (WLTP).
With the Powershift transmission, the engine operates at optimum revs for performance, and at the same time allows Auto Start-Stop to operate below 12 km/h for lower fuel consumption in urban driving conditions. Driving pleasure is further enhanced with the automatic transmission, which offers up to three-speed downshifts for faster overtaking when drivers need maximum acceleration.
Ford's 1.0L EcoBoost engine delivers 100 hp, with fuel consumption from 5.2 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 118 g/km (WLTP). As in the EcoBoost Hybrid version, the engine uses direct high-pressure fuel injection, Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing and a camshaft design for quiet operation. The engine is available in combination with a six-speed manual transmission.
Fiesta's thrilling driving experience is tailored with selectable Normal, Sport and Eco driving profiles that allow drivers to adjust throttle response, ESC, traction control and gear change times for automatic models to match response and performance to the conditions. The Fiesta Active additionally has Trail and Slippery modes.
Technologies for high confidence, comfort and connectivity
The new Fiesta introduces technologies designed to increase comfort, confidence and convenience for drivers and passengers alike, on every kind of journey, from city to motorway.
The standard LED headlights incorporate LED medium and high beam beams and LED daytime running lights for optimum visibility. The advanced Matrix LED headlamps adjust their beams according to traffic conditions. Manoeuvring Light and Bad-Weather Light functions are activated when the vehicle's sensors detect an attempt to manoeuvre at low speed or activation of the wipers, and automatically adjust the beam pattern so that the driver can see more clearly. The Glare-Free High Beam feature uses a front-mounted camera to detect oncoming vehicles and creates a "glare-free spot" in the beam pattern, preventing annoying glare for other drivers. This technology allows increased use of the large ladder to maximise visibility during night driving, without the risk of 'blinding' passing drivers.
A 12.3" fully customisable TFT digital display is introduced in the new Fiesta. On it, drivers can personalise content and prioritise the display of information, including navigation alerts. The display includes thematic displays corresponding to the selected Drive Modes, as well as a separate area for high-priority information such as driver assistance technologies.
The new Fiesta adds Wrong Way Alert to the package of advanced driver assistance technologies. The system uses a windshield-mounted camera and information from the navigation system to alert the driver with audible and visual signals if the two one-way highway entrance signs are violated.
Other advanced technologies include Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Speed Sign Recognition, which maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. The system can automatically brake the Fiesta completely and restart it in heavy traffic (stop-start) conditions on models equipped with the Powershift automatic transmission.
Helping drivers meet the challenges of the city, Active Park Assist can detect suitable parking spaces and - by controlling the steering wheel - park hands-free vertically or parallel to other vehicles, while the driver takes over the accelerator, brake and gear changes.
Technologies designed to prevent or reduce the impact of collisions with other vehicles include Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert and Active Braking, Lane-Keeping Aid and Pre-Collision Assist with Active Braking.
Advanced connectivity technologies also help customers of the new Fiesta to enjoy their driving experiences without stress. The standard FordPass Connect modem allows remote control of functions using the FordPass app. Customers can operate Door Lock/Unlock, Remote Start for Fiesta models with a seven-speed automatic transmission, Vehicle Locator and Vehicle Status, with the latter allowing control of fuel level in the fuel tank, alarm status, tire pressures, engine oil life and more.
The new Fiesta's connectivity services also offer Live Traffic updates for the available navigation system and activation of Local Hazard Information, which alerts drivers to dangerous situations on the road if the incident is after a turn or has not been detected due to other vehicles.
With the optional SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system, drivers control audio and navigation system functions and connected smartphones using simple voice commands. The system offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™ compatibility and is supported by an 8" central touchscreen that is controlled with simple finger gestures (pinch & swipe) and can project a 180-degree image from the optional rearview camera.
New Fiesta models equipped with SYNC 3 now feature the system Rear Occupant Alert, which reminds drivers - if the rear doors have been opened at the start of the journey - to check the rear seats to ensure that they do not leave children or pets in the car.
Other optional, premium features include a wireless charging cradle for smartphones, a 10-speaker B&O Sound System, a built-in subwoofer and a 575-watt Digital Signal Processing Amplifier for a choice of Surround Sound.
The new Fiesta ST in colouring Mean Green
Ford also revealed today for the first time the high-performance Fiesta ST hot hatchback developed by Ford Performance.
The fresh exterior design includes a more aggressive front fascia with upper and lower honeycomb grilles, alongside large lower side vents. The Fiesta ST's upper grille and side vents have a Chrystaline Grey finish, while the aerodynamically optimised spoiler, side skirts, roof spoiler and rear diffuser are painted in body colour. The standard 17-inch or optional 18-inch alloy wheels have a dark black Magnetite finish, while the exterior color palette now includes the bold new ST Mean Green color scheme.
The new Ford Performance seats are designed to provide even better support for drivers during sporty driving, as well as comfort on the road. The integrated headrest and 14-way adjustability helps find the perfect driving position. Special touches on the seats are the contrasting red stitching and Sensico upholstery, which offer a sense of luxury. Also, a sporty steering wheel with a flat bottom section and red accents emphasize the sporty character of the cabin.
