MINI has a long tradition of colour variety. A contrasting roof finish once gave the classic Mini a particularly expressive appearance and has continued to create attractive visual accents in a variety of colours since the modern MINI was launched 20 years ago. With the exclusive 'Multitone Roof', the individualisation of the MINI exterior that can be achieved through paintwork now reaches a whole new dimension. For the first time, an innovative wet-on-wet painting process is being used at the factory in Oxford, UK, to create a three-colour roof.
The first model to adopt this innovative roof design is the MINI Cooper SE . For the first time, the Multitone Roof was offered as part of the MINI Electric Collection for the all-electric model of the British luxury brand, which was presented alongside the world premiere of the latest, new version of the MINI compact models. Meanwhile, the Multitone Roof, which is unique worldwide in the mass-produced car segment, is available as an option for the luxury small 3-door and 5-door MINI and for the MINI Clubman, which is a success in the luxury compact segment.
The striking visual element of the new design is the flowing gradient between the three shades chosen for the Multitone Roof. The front section of the roof is painted in dark San Marino Blue which gradually transitions to the lighter shade of Pearly Aqua, and the rear section becomes Jet Black. The unique aesthetic effect created by this colour gradation is also recognised in combination with the optional, panoramic crystal roof and the optional roof rails. The colour combination of the Multitone Roof creates an interaction that is both attractive and harmonious with virtually all body finishes available for the 3-door MINI, 5-door MINI and MINI Clubman. Consequently, it is available in combination with all exterior colours with the exception of the metallic Chili Red uni and British Racing Green versions and the metallic Indian Summer Red available for the MINI Clubman.
With the contrasting roof finish, the distinctive three-piece MINI bodywork is further emphasised. The horizontal body structure, crystal surfaces and roof are a classic design principle of the brand. The roof design becomes an expression of personal style. Depending on the model version, contrasting finishes in white black and silver are offered as optional, factory-fitted equipment. A red roof is also available for the models. In addition, the range of Genuine MINI Accessories includes roof decorations in various designs - from the British Union Jack flag motif to the Checkered Flag pattern - for retrofitting.
Expanding the range of contrasting finishes to include Multitone Roof has been made possible thanks to a new painting technique at MINI's British factory in Oxford. There, the light Pearly Aqua shade is first applied to the roof of the correspondingly shaped vehicles. In subsequent steps, San Marino Blue is applied to the front part of the roof and Jet Black to the rear, creating the flowing colour gradient of the Multitone Roof. The innovative paint process is fully integrated into the automated production process at the MINI plant in Oxford. However, slight deviations in the colour pattern are due to changing environmental conditions, so that the MINI with Multitone Roof already has a unique, individualised character from the paint process at the factory.
