A century of life for Nick. I. Theocharakis and the production of the first Greek car

2024 is a milestone year for Nick. I. Theocharakis S.A., as the company proudly celebrates 100 years since its foundation.

The company started in 1924 from a small personal business of automotive and liquid fuels founded by Nikolaos I. Theocharakis in Piraeus. The entrepreneurial extroversion, insight and daring of Nikolaos Theocharakis, from the very first steps, have been the guiding principles of the company throughout the years, which have allowed it to decisively make its presence felt throughout these 100 years. The management of the company, from Nikolaos Theocharakis to his sons, Yannis and Vassilis Theocharakis, and now the reins of management have been passed on to Takis Theocharakis.

Undoubtedly, the company's most important milestone was the beginning of its partnership with Nissan in 1961. This was also the first official representation of Nissan Motor Co. in Europe and one of the first in the world.

The Teokar factory

Another important milestone in the company's history was the foundation of the automotive assembly plant in Volos in 1980 (TEOKAR S.A.). This model project was a benchmark, not only for Nik. I. Theocharakis S.A., but also for the reception and recognition of the automobile in our country. The operation of the plant consolidated Nissan's successful presence in the Greek car market and led it to the first place in sales among all car companies for a long period of time, from 1981 to 1993. From the beginning of the plant's operation until 1995, more than 170,000 cars were assembled.

In 1992 there were 8 robotic systems in operation.

From then on, many important things followed: In 1989 the milestone of producing 100,000 cars at the Volos plant. In 1994, the foundation of the model Car Parts Distribution and Training Centre in Aspropyrgos - staff training has been a constant objective since the company's foundation. In 2015 the achievement of 600,000 sales of new Nissan cars in Greece.

In the Volos plant, the Japanese production methods were applied, adapted to the Greek data.

In early 2023, Nik. I. Theocharakis S.A., faithful to its commitment to environmental protection, completed a large investment of photovoltaic complexes in its facilities in Athens, Aspropyrgos and Kalochori of Thessaloniki, promoting and strengthening environmental awareness as an integral part of its culture. With this investment in photovoltaic panels, the company covers a percentage that now reaches 80% of its existing energy needs, aiming for 100% in the near future.

The facilities of TEOKAR S.A. were built on a plot of 264 acres, while the covered areas gradually occupied an area of 35,000 sq.m.
