Η Mercedes - Benz is responding to the needs and demands of modern times by electrifying the smallest SUV in its range, the GLA, with an efficient rechargeable hybrid system. With this version, the GLA 250e, we have come to terms with the Topspeed.gr in weekly cohabitation and we bring you the impressions.
Redefinition
In 2013 Mercedes decided to tentatively try its luck in the emerging C-SUV segment, introducing the first generation of the GLA. I say timidly, as the car was essentially a crossover elevated version of the then-generation A Class. The car exceeded expectations as it became popular with the public thanks to its more adventurous nature than the conventional A Class.
It remained in production until 2019, when Mercedes, seeing its success, decided to replace it by investing in an autonomous model. The second generation of the model was introduced in 2019, redefining it as a pure C-SUV, abandoning the crossover aesthetic. In 2022, the model underwent the standard facelift in order to remain fresh.
Compact but imposing
The GLA has also changed its body type, but retains its sporty orientation in order to differentiate itself from the more practical GLB. The clearly more exuberant new silhouette is characterised by pronounced curves and the company's new Family Look.
In particular, the front end retains the proportions of the Hatchback A Class and adapts the characteristics of the SUV range, with a more vertical front end, a large and imposing grille integrated into the dynamic bumper and flanked by the beautiful longitudinal headlamps. The relatively short bonnet, features the characteristic strong vertical ribs.
The profile adopts a beautiful oval silhouette, proportionally increasing interior space while betraying an aerodynamic and sporty style. Curved lines are combined with muscular surfaces, giving life to an interesting ensemble unlike any other car.
The rear end goes wild with the elongated headlamps narrowing towards the inside of the fifth door, with the deep frame for the number plate and the subtle roof spoiler. The low loading sill bumper emphasizes the dynamism with two nickel-plated oval exhaust tips at the body edges, accentuating the aggressive definition.
Hospitable and atmospheric
The cabin follows the path of modern Mercedes, being the spearhead of the GLA.
The dashboard looks beautiful and robust, with exuberant lines, focusing on technology and digitisation. The main protagonist is the MBUX multimedia system, consisting of dual 10.25-inch screens, each one a continuation of the other, with the left side being the digital instrument panel and the right side the multimedia system, compatible with Android Auto and Apple AirPlay.
The quality of materials, finish and assembly are at the top of the class. Its image looks impressive, creating a sense of security for passengers. The dual screen looks as if it's emerging from the dashboard. On the right side at the passenger seat, the pattern changes with a notch in a carbon fiber-like plastic finish. While the trademark is the round air vents centrally below the screen and to the right and left of the dashboard, giving a touch of dynamism.
Ergonomically the car is well thought out, with the switches in the right places so the driver is focused on the road. The spaces are ideal to comfortably accommodate 4 adult passengers, with an ideal layout and plenty of compartments, helping to increase practicality.
The seats offer very good passenger body support, extremely comfortable and with good tactile feel, as befits a Premium C-SUV. Interestingly, the centre console between the front seats gives a contemporary feel to the cabin, benefiting from the positioning of the gear selector on the turn signal switch next to the steering wheel.
All in all, the many aluminium details emphasise the luxury, highlighting the style and aesthetics of the car.
A characteristic feature of modern Mercedes is the evening LED ambient lighting that beautifies the space, creating a relaxing atmosphere.
The luggage volume is reduced by 50 litres compared to conventional versions due to the battery, reaching 385 litres, and 1,385 litres with the seats fully folded.
In the constellation of electrification
Mercedes-Benz equips its rechargeable hybrid SUV with an efficient powertrain with a total output of 218 hp and 450 Nm of torque, consisting of a 1.33-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 163 hp and 270 Nm of torque and an electric motor with 109 hp and 300 Nm, sending the drive to the front axle. It is mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (8G-DCT).
The system is combined and completed by a 15.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, of which 11.5 kWh is used net, with electric range set at 63-70 km according to WLTP standards.
Everyday life with luxury
We leave theory and get down to practice in order to experience the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250e in every possible condition and road network.
In the city is easy to drive, reminiscent of smaller cars in the B-SUV class. This is aided by its oval shape, high driving position and large glass surfaces that significantly improve visibility, elements that, combined with the small 11.4-meter turning circle, increase maneuverability in the urban cycle. At the same time, the ability to drive purely electrically in the urban environment reduces fuel consumption to zero.
In the mountain and rural network highlights the dynamic driving characteristics, elaborated by the efficient powertrain. The horsepower combined with its strong torque gives it the necessary power to climb sharp uphill bends unimpeded. The grip matches the company's reputation, increasing the feeling of safety. Suspension operation balances between comfort and stability, sealing the good work done by the technicians of the three-pointed star.
On the motorway the noble feeling of rolling quality and sound insulation, allow no doubt even for the smallest SUV in the Mercedes range, creating all the conditions for a pleasant and safe journey, even at high speeds.
General the GLA embodies the entire driving philosophy of Mercedes. Pleasant, comfortable and safe, and at the same time quite versatile.
With three driving profiles, EV for all-electric traffic especially in urban areas and up to 140 km/h. Hybrid, in which the two engines work together, but 80% uses electricity. At the same time there is the possibility of "Battery Save", using mainly the petrol engine and saving precious kWh. In Sport the steering and suspension are stiffened and all power and torque is available at the driver's discretion.
Consumption on a full charge is just 1.5 litres/100 km, which will exceed 8.5 litres/100 km when the battery is discharged, making clear the need to be fully charged for the system to run smoothly.
The long charging times required in a typical fast charger limit its usability despite the relatively long range for a PHEV, which in real-world conditions translates into about 50-55 km of pure electric driving.
Focusing on prestige
Mercedes' aim is to satisfy urban consumers with a higher social status, who need a car to meet their transport and family needs, which offers unquestionable prestige and is capable of both short and long trips, but at the same time is capable of flexible city driving, making the GLA an ideal choice.
The Plug - In Entry Level SUV of the star
In the catalogues the prices of the rechargeable hybrid GLA 250e start from 56.499,99 €, which reflects the higher cost of ownership of Plug-In Hybrid models. However, it doesn't overstate the case, trying to keep the value within reason as the entry level Plug - In Hybrid SUV of the three-pointed star.
