In the consciousness of the world the name of Mercedes - Benz has established itself with its large and mid-size luxury sedans, which have given the German brand the nickname "the lady of the road". In fact, Mercedes - Benz is the initiator of the Premium market. The reason is because they managed to offer luxury to a wider buying public. We sought this experience of luxury in our weekly symbiosis with the iconic Mercedes-Benz C180!
Undisputed leader
The history of the Mercedes C - Class begins in September 1993 with the W202, which replaced the iconic 190E (W201), the model that was Mercedes' first attempt in the mid-size luxury segment in 1982 and could be considered the forerunner of the C-Class. The car is now in its fifth generation (W206), which was introduced in 2021 and adopts elements of the larger S Class and E Class. With total global sales reaching 10.5 million units and a sales increase in 2023 of 10% over 2022, the car is the undisputed leader in the mid-size luxury segment! A category that the German company practically founded!
Fresh approach
On the design front, the German company has made leaps and bounds, abandoning the once conservative profile and introducing a fresher and sportier approach, fully in line with the brand's new Family Look.
Looking at the front end, the low nose catches the eye, reminiscent of the brand's sporty offerings. The company's emblem dominates the centre of the oval grille integrated into the bumper. Attention will be drawn by the triangular star motif, which becomes visible with the reflection of light!
The long bonnet is characterised by strong vertical ribs along its length, at the height of the oval Full LED headlights, giving it a wild but beautiful "look".
In profile, the aggressive wedge-shaped silhouette stands out, giving an impressive line. The result is that the car looks like it's running even when stationary. The muscular surfaces are combined with beautiful curves and simple, uncluttered lines that enhance the beauty of the car. The curved strong rib, along the length of the vehicle, emphasizes and characterizes every detail of the car. The low bodywork highlights the sporty orientation of the mid-size sedan!
The rear end adopts the company's new design language to the highest degree, with influences from the brand's larger sedans! The third volume features a subtle spoiler and completes the body with a distinct blunt corner. The spearhead is the evolution of the LED graphic headlamps, which reinforces the links with the past, but with a modern style. They have a wedge-shaped design and extend inside the third volume door, where, combined with the muscular bumper with two large trapezoidal exhaust outlets at the ends, they deliver an extremely sporty effect!
The design, apart from the beautiful ensemble, is well thought out especially on a functional level. What do I mean? That the wedge-shaped silhouette of the sedan body, combined with the long, low nose and the raised third volume, has achieved top aerodynamic performance with a drag coefficient of just 0.24 Cd.
Another dimension
One of the strong points of the new Mercedes-Benz C180 is undoubtedly the cabin, which is captivating from the very first encounter. Although the interior designers have avoided extremes, opting for simple and unadorned lines, they have achieved an impressive result!
The dashboard aesthetic is developed around a prominent (T), which centrally and vertically integrates the huge 11.9-inch touchscreen of the second-generation MBUX multimedia system with advanced functions, compatible with Apple AirPlay and Android Auto. Physical switches have been reduced to the absolute essentials, with the help of digital technology!
The automatic gearbox selector is integrated into the headlamp lever next to the steering wheel, increasing the available space. Thus, at the base of the centre console, which separates the driver and passenger seats, there are two spacious compartments, the first of which even has a point for inductive mobile phone charging!
Behind the beautiful three-spoke steering wheel, there's a 12.3-inch digital dashboard that looks like a tablet and has all the digital readouts for the car.
The quality of materials, fit and finish is top notch, creating a beautiful feeling for passengers. The semi-bucket seats focus on comfort, achieving the ideal support for the passengers' bodies, leaving the feeling of an anatomical armchair!
Ergonomics is also at a high level, as safety-driven and in combination with the digitalisation of functions, the driver will never have to be distracted from the road!
The luggage capacity is 455 litres, which is sufficient for a family of five. At the same time, the rear seats fold down, increasing practicality levels!
The feature that will pleasantly surprise you is the Ambient night lighting with purple light as a key feature, which creates a welcoming, relaxing atmosphere that contributes to a relaxing evening drive. From the multimedia system, the driver can change colour or even combine two colours.
Overall, it focuses on luxury and quality in order to satisfy the high demands of consumers in the segment and at the same time confirm the reputation around the mid-size sedans with the three-pointed star!
Ropato Downsizing
The turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, codenamed M254, delivers 170 hp from 5,500 to 6,100 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,800-4,000 rpm and provides rear-wheel drive. It features mild hybrid EQ Boost technology, which adds an additional 20 hp from EQ Boost at low revs. The already high torque of the engine is further supported by the torque of the electric motor-generator, achieving a downsizing torque. The mild hybrid powertrain is partnered with a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission called 9G-TRONIC!
Driving pleasure different from the usual

In the city the Mercedes-Benz C180 gets a raw deal. The 4.75-metre body is limited to the urban cycle. Traffic in narrow streets is prohibitive, with the driver preferring central arteries. At the same time, the low driving position combined with the long nose reduces visibility. However, thanks to the thoughtful design it catches the eye of passers-by!

At the same time, the engine sounds beautiful to the driver's ears, leaving a lot of promise! Excellent in feel is the nine-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. The short ratios annihilate the dead time of the shifts without the driver noticing, while utilizing the full range of the engine from both low and high revs. The average combined fuel consumption at reasonable levels reached 7.5 litres per 100 km!
