60 years of Ford Mustang: a global automotive symbol in the new Ford era

With a total of more than 10 million cars sold across the globe since 1964, the Ford Mustang has been the world's best-selling sports car for more than a decade.

This iconic model is now celebrating its 60th anniversary with festivities that pay tribute to one of the world's most legendary cars that is synonymous with freedom and ultimate performance.

"Unexpected". "Special". "The classic car of the future". These are just a few of the words and phrases used to describe the all-new and highly revolutionary Ford Mustang when it was first released on the other side of the Atlantic in 1964. They weren't wrong.

Sixty years after its official debut, the evergreen Ford Mustang has become a global cultural icon on four wheels, and for more than a decade it has been the world's best-selling sports car. In fact, since 2015, when it officially stepped on its wheels outside of America, the Ford Mustang has amassed more than 1 million sales and more than 10 million in total since it was first unveiled to the public on April 17, 1964 at the New York World's Fair.

Ford had predicted that the Mustang would sell around 100,000 cars in its first year on the local car market. However, its appeal was such that 417,000 Mustangs found new owners already in the first 12 months of its US launch. In fact, the 1,000,000th Mustang had been sold no later than 1966.

The Ford Mustang - a car that for six decades has starred in over 5,000 movies - was not just a sports car. In fact, it was a new kind of car, which attracted from the very first moment a younger generation of buyers who were not interested in the boring and conservative cars driven by their parents.

This audience was looking for an innovative, unconventional and passionate vehicle, with a strong personality in terms of design and the highest possible performance and efficiency. An important part of the great appeal of the Ford Mustang was that from the outset it expressed the desires of many different buyers - from those who were simply looking for a basic car, to those who wanted a luxury vehicle for intense driving thrills and a total sense of freedom. This was and remains to this day the soul and essence of the Ford Mustang, exactly sixty years after it was first introduced into the 'backstreets' of modern motoring.
