Have you seen the new Ibiza?

The 5th generation SEAT Ibiza makes its world debut only as a five-door using Vw's new MQB AO platform. The ... baby Leon looks smaller but is even roomier and will have all of Volkswagen's Euro6 engines. The 1.0 TSI with 94 or 113bhp, the new EVO 1.5 TSI with 148bhp and the 1.6 TDI diesel with 78 and 93bhp. It will also have all the modern electronic goodies like a reversing camera and an 8 inch touchscreen with Apple Car Play & Android Auto. So all the ingredients are here, but are they enough to make it a best seller?

This year's Geneva Motor Show marks a very special year for SEAT. This is mainly because the 5th generation of the SEAT Ibiza, the Spanish brand's best-selling model with over 5.4 million sales, will make its official debut. "SEAT is in a phase of consolidation and growth and we are working to become one of the most dynamic brands in the industry," said Luca de Meo, President of SEAT S.A. "The new SEAT Ibiza will boost the brand and become a benchmark in its segment."

This is another step in SEAT's larger and more aggressive product policy, which began with the launch of the brand's first SUV, the Ateca, and continues with the updated Leon. Now it is the turn of the new Ibiza to complete the strengthening of the brand's three key pillars. New models are also due to be launched soon, including the Arona compact crossover later this year. The company has entered its fifth consecutive year of sales growth, even recording a 16.5% increase in January compared to 2016.

An integrated model

The 5th generation SEAT Ibiza has been created in Barcelona and is a decisive step for the future of SEAT. Firstly, because it features the latest Volkswagen Group technology, the MQB-A0 (Modular Quer Baukasten) platform, which demonstrates SEAT's importance within the Group, as this platform is being used for the first time in the segment. And secondly, because it boasts advanced technology, unique dynamism and a remarkably increased interior space. A completely new model that also retains its youthful spirit, dynamism, functionality and top comfort, using a fresh and sporty new design, reflecting the brand's DNA.

"The new SEAT Ibiza showcases SEAT's design DNA and delivers fantastic driving performance, while the new MQB-A0 platform takes SEAT to the next level of technology and comfort, while significantly improving spaciousness and functionality," said Dr. Matthias Rabe, Vice-President of SEAT for Research and Development.

The 5th generation model establishes the Spanish brand with its eyes firmly fixed on the future with an emphasis on factors such as practicality, smart technology and connectivity. The new Ibiza includes systems already seen in the Leon and Ateca that are not found in its class (Front Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control ACC, among others), as well as a wireless charger and GSM signal booster. In addition, the new Ibiza is 100% connected thanks to three options: Apple Car Play, Android Auto and Mirror Link. These features reveal SEAT's ambition to become a leader in connectivity and the development of new automotive solutions. All this technology can be enjoyed for the first time through an integrated 8-inch touchscreen display.

The CUPRACER Evo 17 racing car and the new SEAT Leon CUPRA 300hp will also have the opportunity to shine on the stand

SEAT Leon Cupra, the most powerful SEAT

The fastest model in the history of the Spanish brand, the SEAT Leon CUPRA, will also be on display at the SEAT stand. Although everyone will be talking about the 300 hp engine with 380 Nm of maximum torque and acceleration from 0 - 100 km in 4.9 seconds, it is worth noting above all that the Leon CUPRA will now also be available with 4Drive Total Traction system in the ST version combined with a DSG dual-clutch transmission.

The latest and most powerful member of the CUPRA family provides the driver with intensity, dynamism, sporty style, practicality and flexibility of choice thanks to the three available versions: the five-door, the SC coupe and the family ST. As a CUPRA, it ensures a balance between passion and sensation as well as a solid combination of sporty design, top technology and exceptional dynamic performance.

Along with the Leon CUPRA 300hp, the SEAT stand will host another spectacular model in matte grey, with carbon fibre interior and bronze aesthetic details on both the exterior and interior. Of course we are talking about the SEAT Leon CUPRACER Evo 17, the racing version that will take part in the TCR International Series races this year. It is available in two versions - with DSG and with a serial gearbox - and is equipped with a 350hp engine (20 more horsepower than the 2016 version) and 420 Nm of torque.

Looking ahead to the new season, improvements have been made to the brakes (including the control system) with the development of an ABS and ESC that improves feel and handling. The SEAT Leon CUPRACER Evo 17 is front-wheel drive with VAQ electro-hydraulic lock differential, brakes with 378mm front discs with 6-piston calipers and 272mm rear. Brake and anti-roll bar distribution can be adjusted, as well as the camber angle and convergence of the front suspension (McPherson) and the height and camber of the rear suspension (multiple links).
