In November in Greece the VW Transporter T6.1

If there is one commercial vehicle that can be described as a "milestone" in its class - and not only - it is definitely the Volkswagen Transporter. From when it was first introduced seventy years ago to the present day, the Transporter has managed to evolve into more than just another van. In addition to being a favourite vehicle of professionals, it has evolved into a symbol of entire eras and, it is no coincidence that, today, collectors are paying fortunes to own a T1.

With all this and more, the Transporter, in its 70 years of existence, has exceeded 12 million sales worldwide. The first version, codenamed T1, was launched in 1949, distinguished by its clever combination of maximum practicality and clean design that was immediately appreciated by professionals. Over the years, the Transporter has acquired iconic status, reaching six generations after continuous development and pioneering work. Characteristically, each new version always put professionals in a new relationship with their vehicle, offering innovation combined with practicality.

It is a given, then, that the German automotive industry, in presenting each generation and each updated version of perhaps the most successful commercial vehicle on the planet, has to compete with itself. This is what Volkswagen Professional Vehicles is doing now, presenting the T6.1 version, choosing this code with influences from the world of computers, with an emphasis on the now digital essence of the model. The new Transporter 6.1 connects online, offers, if desired, digital information, has automated driving functions, upgraded features and design. Expected in Greece in November, prices will be announced in the near future. So let's see what's new and innovative that the Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 is coming to offer.

Continuously online

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles connects the new Transporter 6.1 with the outside world more than ever before. The completely redesigned instrument panel is offered for the first time with fully digital instruments. The Digital Cockpit together with the multimedia system create a new digital layout. All multimedia (infotainment) systems are connected as standard to an Online Connectivity Unit (OCU or Online Connectivity Unit) with an integrated eSIM card. The OCU is the common reference point for a new range of internet-based functions and services, grouped under the brand names "We Connect" and "We Connect Plus". For the management of corporate fleets there is "We Connect Fleet".

In addition, the online connection in the new Transporter 6.1 allows for wider use of completely new technologies, such as natural voice control: "Hey, Volkswagen!". It's all it takes for the new Transporter 6.1 to listen to the driver's demands. For example, in the navigation system, instead of entering a destination via the on-screen keypad, just saying the destination by voice is enough!

The new Transporter 6.1 is... a workplace

The new dashboard meets not only the requirements of digitisation but also high levels of everyday practicality. It is thus equipped with an additional "shelf" in front of the driver, as well as a larger open storage area and another "shelf" in front of the front passenger. Also new in design are cup holders located near the front pillars, as well as a larger seat with optional inductive charging for smartphones. The new dashboard vents can now be adjusted in either direction and can be opened or closed simultaneously using a sliding slider (previously there were two sliders). The steering wheel has also been redesigned. The new multi-function steering wheel now features a View switch, which with a single click enables switching between the Digital Cockpit's thematic modules.

The new Transporter 6.1 turns electromechanically

The electromechanically assisted steering wheel is used for the first time in the new Transporter 6.1 and offers two important benefits. Compared to the hydraulic system it replaces, the new steering system is controlled according to driving conditions, thus reducing fuel consumption. At the same time, thanks to its control capability, it supports many new driver assistance systems.

Example 1: Lane Assist. It uses cameras to detect road signs and helps the driver to stay in his or her lane.

Example 2: Park Assist. Park Assist (Park Assist). When activated, the new Transporter 6.1 automatically recognises the parking space and automatically enters and exits the parking space. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake and check the surrounding area. Example 3: Trailer Assist: Every model in the range is an ideal towing vehicle with a towing capacity of up to 2,500 kg. Manoeuvring with a trailer is now made easier in the new Transporter 6.1 thanks to Trailer Assist. This relieves the driver of the need to adapt to the special driving style required in the reversing phase with a trailer. Using the rotary switch on the power mirror adjustment system (which becomes a joystick for this purpose) and the cockpit display, the driver simply sets the angle at which the trailer should be moved backwards. The new Transporter 6.1 takes the wheel!

The new Transporter 6.1 offers excellent handling and comfort level

The electromechanical power steering system transmits commands to the wheels more directly than in previous models. Which makes the new Transporter 6.1 much more responsive and precise in handling. In order to make use of the new steering system with the new low rolling resistance tyres, both conventional and adjustable suspensions have been further improved in terms of comfort and dynamic handling. With the introduction of the second generation DCC, the adjustment options have also been increased. Through the ride profile selection, the driver can now set the desired damping level using a scroll switch.

On conventional suspensions, the damping is determined by the spring travel, ensuring that the new Transporter 6.1 remains completely stable under all load conditions. The operation of the familiar skid and brake control systems has been further enhanced by the addition of the XDS system, which improves the traction and grip characteristics of the new Transporter 6.1 by subtly intervening with the brakes. The combination of electromechanical steering, as well as dynamic control and adaptive suspension tuning systems, results in a significant improvement in the dynamic characteristics of the new Transporter 6.1, while maintaining - including on longer journeys - the familiar levels of comfort.

It has impressive safety systems

The new systems include a road sign recognition system, while for extra safety there is also the side protection system from the Crafter adapted for the new Transporter 6.1. Protection against rear-end accidents is provided by the Rear Traffic Alert system, which gives an audible warning if there are vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists approaching the new Transporter 6.1 from the side. New to the range but standard is Cross Wind Assist, which automatically stabilises the new Transporter 6.1 in the event of cross winds.

This is achieved by the independent wheel-independent activation of the braking system, so that the new Transporter 6.1 always remains in the ideal position on the road, unaffected by crosswinds. Also new and in conjunction with the DSG is the optional ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), which now features a stop-and-go function. In the event of traffic congestion or city driving, the new Transporter 6.1 starts automatically as soon as the vehicle in front starts.

The new Transporter 6.1 is charismatic

If there's one commercial vehicle on this planet whose design is considered iconic, it's the new Transporter 6.1.Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles hasn't stopped for a moment in the development of the model. Particularly impressive in the new Transporter 6.1 is the grille, which is now noticeably larger and forms a single design unit with the new bumper. All the elements below the bonnet, including the headlamps and wings, are new but nevertheless characteristic of the new Transporter 6.1.

On all versions, two chrome cross strips connect the new headlamps to the grille. The lines of the two transverse stripes extend as far as the LED daytime running lights, right up to the base of the headlamps, which can also be LED depending on the version. On the more luxurious trim levels, a chrome strip in turn adds a refined tone to the bumper. With or without chrome elements, the new front-end design accentuates the width and enhances the charismatic appearance of the new Transporter 6.1. Six newly designed wheels, six new exterior colours and seven new two-tone colours complete the attractive exterior upgrade.

It has impressive equipment

The new Transporter 6.1 features highly upgraded standard equipment. Depending on the version, some of these include electric windows, central locking, a new multifunction leather steering wheel, electrically adjustable mirrors, heated seats, decorative trim on the instrument panel and side panels, new H7 headlights or LED headlights and tail lights, interior LED lighting and Composition Audio audio system with Bluetooth hands-free, USB and SD ports, Smartphone/iPhone connectivity, 8-inch touchscreen, App Connect (smart phone app integration), We Connect and We Connect Plus (online services and functions).

The new Transporter 6.1 is a top performer for everyday tasks

In its 70-year history, the Transporter has gained a reputation as a robust vehicle that meets all the needs of the modern professional. It has established itself in the perception of experts as the ideal vehicle for delivery companies, commercial and construction companies, public services and service providers in tourism, transport and elsewhere.

In a constant effort to evolve, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is constantly presenting solutions and conveniences, and version 6.1 could be no exception. Several elements have been improved while introducing some completely new features for everyday tasks. Multi-directionally adjustable driver and passenger seats as well as the steering wheel, interior trim in dust-hiding colours or two-tone colours that create a very pleasant atmosphere for driver and passengers, particularly robust bumpers, seat upholstery made of very durable materials, numerous electrical conveniences (windows, mirrors, central locking, etc.), and a number of other features.), efficient air conditioning and/or roof ventilation systems, LED reading lights for better performance, glass surfaces that reflect the heat of sunlight, a 230 V electrical outlet next to the driver's seat and a locker that locks into the double seat on the passenger side, and much more.

In addition, a new loading mode has been designed for particularly long objects that can now be pushed under the double seat on the passenger side (under-seat loading mode). This feature increases the maximum length of the loading area from 2,450 to 2,800 mm and, in the longer wheelbase version, from 2,900 to 3,300 mm. The Transporter 6.1 is also equipped with a separate load compartment locking system (for vehicles with a partition) to allow independent locking from the cab.

Option 1: Only the cargo area is locked (Postman mode) and Option 2: Only the cab is locked (Workshop mode). Later the Courier Pack will be available, which features even more reinforced parts, such as the alternator, battery and drive shafts, for high resistance to particularly high stresses.

The new Transporter 6.1 with efficient TDI engines

The engine range includes top-of-the-range two-litre diesel engines. The highly efficient turbo diesel (TDI) engines are available in three power outputs: 110, 150 and 199 hp. The 150 and 199 hp versions can be combined with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. All versions of the new Transporter 6.1 with the TDI engines meet the most demanding Euro 6d TEMP EAVP emission standards.
