As an alternative to electrification, we could describe the first all-electric proposal of the Subaru, which incorporates the brand's driving technology into the 218-horsepower Solterra AWD four-wheel drive. At Topspeed.gr we had the opportunity to drive it for a weekend.

Passport to "electrified" Europe

Introduced in 2022, the Solterra is a rebranding of the Toyota bX4 with which they evolved together, but incorporates Subaru's innovative technologies. The model is a passport for Europe to bring its range into compliance with its emissions and strict standards.

The name shows the shift to ecology, as it comes from the Latin words "Sol", meaning sun, and "Terra", meaning earth.

Futuristic

Design-wise they have chosen composers and strong lines with edges, forming an original silhouette.

The front looks massive and imposing. The large trapezoidal grille dominates the centre, flanked by the futuristic Full - Led lights, which extend to the fenders. The bonnet has a double surface, artfully concealing its volume. The bumper in black hard plastic is impressive, which makes the car look fierce.

The profile highlights the volume of the car with strong ribs and edges, the wing flares continue the pattern of the bumpers in black plastic, giving it a unique design, which  overall attracts the attention of passers-by.

The rear focuses on aerodynamics with a large spoiler at the top of the fifth door and a more subtle one at the base of the window. Large headlights with Led graphics hug the entire rear end, while the bumper looks dynamic thanks to the aerodynamic diffuser at the bottom.

Space

The futuristic interior is impressive, reminiscent of a spaceship cockpit. Careful assembly and construction with good quality materials and finishes. The floating dashboard with its aviation-style console gives a modern effect. Centrally dominating the large 12.3-inch screen of the multimedia system, compatible with Android Auto and Apple AirPlay, looms like a control panel. The small multifunctional steering wheel is reminiscent of an aircraft rudder and the crisp 7-inch digital instrument panel is positioned much higher, giving a different feel.

The flat floor gives plenty of space, especially for rear passengers and their feet. The car is extremely spacious, but the absence of the classic driver's cupboard, which has been relocated to the lower part of the console, is problematic. Compartments are allocated several within the cabin.

Functionally and ergonomically it is well thought out, having placed most of the switches at the top of the console, within reach of the driver's hand, so that he or she has complete control of the controls without being distracted from the road. We also liked the cell phone locker behind the switches with wireless charging capability.

The seats are comfortable, providing excellent lumbar and lateral support for the passengers' bodies.

The luggage compartment has a volume of 441 litres, and with the rear seats fully folded it creates a flat load space.

Faith in efficient all-wheel drive

With the Solterra, Subaru remains true to its philosophy of efficient all-wheel drive. Unlike its "sister" Toyota bz4x model, Subaru opts for exclusive drive to all 4 wheels, which are powered by two permanent magnet and newly designed eAxle electric motors mounted on 2 axles. Their output is 80 KW (or 107 hp) each, with combined horsepower reaching 214 hp and 338 Nm of torque.

With the timeless values

The introduction of electrification for Subaru is done in recognition and with the aim of maintaining the timeless driving values that are its identity. Driving the Solterra therefore in every possible condition and road network, they focus on these.

In the city the car is unfair given its volume and dimensions. It is better for the driver to avoid traffic in narrow streets, opting for main arteries. However, the car is nervous and direct, helping in manoeuvres, as long as they are in accordance with the KOC. On the plus side, the steering wheel has an 11.2-meter turning circle and satisfactory peripheral visibility.

In the mountain and rural network captures Subaru's timeless exemplary handling, with excellent handling, good balance and 50/50 permanent four-wheel drive. It doesn't have a sporty feel, yet it focuses on safety and comfort. The suspension is balanced, and for the more anxious, allows for dynamic driving.

On the motorway the feeling was as expected and by modern standards. Good soundproofing and thoughtful ride quality round out the driving experience of Subaru's first attempt at electrification.

General Subaru has managed to retain its driving DNA in its electric model. The spearhead is the advanced X-Mode drive system, which highlights the benefits of all-wheel drive, achieving exceptional levels of traction off the tarmac on asphalt, snow, dirt or mud. Electricity management is satisfactory and user-friendly, with a satisfactory 410 km WLTP standard, while the actual range is around 350 km. The average combined electricity consumption reached 19.5 kWh.

Seeking the alternative

Looking to find the target consumer, we conclude that it is the ideal solution for those who have embraced the idea of electromobility, but are not covered by the "more commercial spectrum" of the market and are looking for the alternative, with an emphasis on active safety and a sporty feel. They also need adequate space and a shape that is unlike any other.

Pinched

Pricing is tweaked with the 4eXPERIENCE standard version is 58.500€, while the richest test version 4eXPERIENCE Plus costs 62.500€. These prices are without the subsidy of the "Moving Electric III" programme.

Conclusion
Subaru is "playing" with the sun and the earth, foreshadowing the ecological concerns of its all-electric model. Featuring provocative looks and a futuristic interior, it makes its mark in the age of electrification. However, Subaru means all-wheel drive and road manners. So that's where the Solterra focuses, showing that it doesn't stray from the brand's timeless values. Although remarkable, mainly due to its tweaked price, it is an 'alternative' option in the tough competition of the energy transition.
