Volkswagen : Intelligent energy recovery in the ID.3 and ID.4

  Η
energy recovery during braking, or in a broader sense energy recovery
when the car generally slows down, it significantly increases the autonomy of any
electric vehicle. In the news
Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4, has
adopt an approach aimed at maximum energy efficiency.

  The
question is simple and yet difficult: what should happen when the driver of a car is
electric car lift the foot off the right pedal? Should the
electric motor to act as a generator, converting the kinetic
energy into electricity to charge the batteries or need to operate
without making energy recovery, so that the car rolls and the momentum
of being fully used for his free tremor?

  The
answers to this fundamental question for engineers and drivers alike
vary, depending on the manufacturer and model. Some electric
vehicles always recover energy during any phase of movement.
In the case of its brand new electric models,
ID.3 and ID.4, η Volkswagen chose a different, more effective strategy: the free
tremor has priority because any energy conversion inevitably
leads to losses. This applies to the position
D (Drive), the main function of the car, which
is automatically activated at every startup.

  Η
free-rolling mode (rolling), in which the driver raises the
foot off the gas pedal early, making driving relaxed and
predictable. If the driver wants to slow down further, he or she presses the pedal
brake and thus activates the brake energy recovery. For up to about 0,25
g, with other
words in the majority of everyday braking actions, the electric motor
is the one that performs the braking, while the electric servo brake activates
the mechanical brakes of the wheels only in situations requiring greater
slowdown. The transition from engine braking to hydraulic braking
almost unnoticed, thanks to the extremely precise and fast control of the
drive and braking systems. These systems also ensure that the
rear wheels, where brake energy recovery takes place, always have sufficient
adhesion.

  Any
model of the family
ID. has the predictive support Eco Assistance in the basic
equipment. This analyses data from the navigation system and sensors
the car and provides the driver with effective support for efficient
and relaxed driving. Once the
ID.3 or the ID.4 approach a zone which
requires slow speeds - such as residential areas, intersections or turns -
τ
o Eco Assistance warns the driver to lift his foot from the accelerator pedal. From this
the moment and after, the system manages the optimal rolling and recovery
energy without the need for driver intervention. The car responds
similar when approaching a vehicle in front of you travelling at a lower speed
speed.

  Ο
driver can use the driving mode selector switch on the right
of the instrument panel to change from the position
D (Drive) in a position B (Brake) and vice versa, per
at any time. In function
B, the ID.3
and
ID.4
almost always recover energy during movement, but not until the
vehicle to come to a complete stop. The limit is set at 0,13
g - enough to clearly
noticeable slowing down, but not so much as to give the subtle sense of
using only the accelerator pedal for acceleration and braking of the vehicle, a function
also known as
onepedal driving of an electric car. This was a
deliberate choice of
Volkswagen, as it wants to offer its customers the
the possibility of a more relaxed and enjoyable drive.

  At
some models
ID., the driver may be based on a second tool in addition to the
driving mode selector to affect the operation between rolling and
energy recovery, through the choice of driving profile (part of the sports package
Plus). The profile Sport supports recovery
brake energy - also in place
D, but not to the same extent as in B. In some
cases, the level of battery charge also plays a role: it is understood that the battery
that if it's fully charged, it can no longer store recovered
energy.

  The
ID.3 and ID.4, the first being
already available in Greece and the second one expected in the first quarter of
year, are the first two models of the electric model family
ID. Volkswagen. Clever design, strong personality and
innovative technologies, are the
DNA of ID. models. Η Volkswagen will invest eleven billion euros in the
electrification by 2024, as part of the strategy
Transform 2025+.
