Volkswagen has unveiled the new ID.7, the brand's first global electric model for the mid-size segment. The combination of a range of up to 700 kilometres (WLTP), a superior powertrain, a spacious interior and premium technologies makes the ID.7 a comfortable limousine for long-distance travel and opens up a new segment for the ID model family. At almost five metres long, the model has an improved customer-focused operating philosophy and a premium appearance. The ID.7 is scheduled for launch this year in Europe and China and from 2024 in North America.

Thomas Schäfer, Managing Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars: "With ID.7 we are taking the next step in our electric attack. Our electric limousine offers a high level of comfort and great autonomy. As early as 2026, we will offer the widest electric range of any manufacturer in Europe - from an entry-level model for less than 25,000 euros to the ID.7, the new top model in the ID. family. Our goal is to achieve an 80% electric car share in Europe by 2030. From 2033, Volkswagen will produce only electric vehicles in Europe."

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Directors of Volkswagen, responsible for Development: "The ID.7 sets new energy efficiency standards based on the modular electrification platform (MEB). We are aiming for a range of up to 700 km according to WLTP. This is made possible by very good aerodynamics and by significantly increased efficiency in the areas of powertrain and thermal management."

The ID.7 is the first MEB model with a completely new, highly efficient generation of electric motors. With 210 kW (286 PS), it is the most powerful and highest-torque electric motor in a Volkswagen ID. model to date. This power variant is used in the ID.7 regardless of the battery size selected. The power unit with the internal designation APP550 was developed together with Volkswagen Group Components in Kassel (Germany) and is also produced there.

The new electric motor has been optimised above all in terms of energy consumption. Depending on the battery sizes, a WLTP range of up to 700 km and a charging capacity of up to around 200 kW are planned. The ID.7 therefore highlights its suitability for customers who drive long distances. The ID.7 is almost five metres long and was designed with aerodynamic principles at its core. Its roof slopes elegantly backwards in coupé style and helps to achieve an excellent drag coefficient of around 0.23 depending on the vehicle equipment. The long wheelbase and short wheelbases create ample space inside the vehicle for all passengers.

First Volkswagen with a new philosophy in terms of displays and operation and exclusive equipment options

A new operating and display philosophy is introduced in ID.7. With this, Volkswagen has taken customer feedback into account and improved the operating experience in relevant areas. This includes the following features as standard:

  • 38 cm (15 inch) infotainment system screen
  • augmented reality head-up display
  • a new air conditioning operating philosophy integrated into the top level of the infotainment system as well as freely assignable buttons for preferred functions

Imelda Labbé, member of the Board of Directors of Volkswagen for Sales, the Marketing and the Aftersales"The ID.7 is an extremely important model for Volkswagen in Europe, China and North America. The ID.7 offers an attractive package that will delight both existing and new Volkswagen customers around the world. In this Volkswagen, we offer premium technologies that impress with their exclusivity, premium comfort and high degree of everyday usability."

With new massage seats and an electronically adjustable panoramic sunroof, the ID.7 offers equipment options that are otherwise only available in the upper classes of premium competitors. The new panoramic sunroof with smart glass can be switched between opaque and transparent settings with touch control. Like many other functions in the ID.7, the roof can also be operated via natural voice commands - this is done using the new IDA voice assistant. The optional front seats are also a new development: for the first time in a Volkswagen, they offer an optional Climatronic adjustable seat - cooled or heated as required. Also available is a massage function that is approved by the initiative in Germany "Campaign for a Healthier Back" (AGR). The range of options is rounded off by a 700-watt Harman Kardon sound system: 14 high-tech speakers, including the front centre speaker and the subwoofer in the luggage compartment, provide an impressive sound experience in the new Volkswagen limousine.

Improved bestinclass driver assistance systems

Travel Assist with swarm data can take over the lateral and longitudinal control of the ID.7 as required. Volkswagen developed this feature together with CARIAD, the Volkswagen Group's software company. If desired, the ID.7 can also use Travel Assist to support assisted lane changing on the motorway at speeds above 90 km/h. The driver remains an observer and driving stress is significantly reduced. When it comes to parking, the electric Volkswagen can independently perform assisted manoeuvres in various ways. One of these is parking with memory function at a distance of up to 50 metres.

Accelerated electric attack: ten new models by 2026. The new ID.7 is one of ten new electric models to be launched by Volkswagen by 2026. This year alone, the new ID.3, the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz and the ID.7 are being introduced. An electric compact SUV and the production version of the ID. 2all priced under 25,000 euros are planned for 2026. This will give the automaker from Wolfsburg the largest range of electric vehicles compared to its competitors. The new ID.7 will be produced at Volkswagen's plant in Emden (Germany) for the European and North American markets. In China, the corresponding ID.7 models will be produced locally.
