The launch of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will start in October 2023. The new generation of models will be offered worldwide with all-electric drive and, depending on the region, with plug-in hybrid systems, as well as with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines using 48-volt mild hybrid technology. Like all previous model generations, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is produced at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing, where the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5 are also manufactured.
Sporty elegance and impressive presence with a new design language
A clean and simple design language emphasises the sporty elegance and presence of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. Compared to its predecessor, the new version has increased in length by 97 mm (5,060 mm), in width by 32 mm (1,900 mm) and in height by 36 mm (1,515 mm). The wheelbase has been increased by 20 mm to 2,995 mm.
The front end of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan features a modern interpretation of BMW's twin headlamps and kidney-shaped mask. The LED elements mounted almost vertically serve as turn signals and daytime running lights. The expressive BMW kidney grille features a wide contour, with the latter adopting optional BMW Iconic Glow lighting.
From the side, the high shoulder line, dynamically designed surfaces and two precisely delineated characteristic lines shape the vehicle's athletic body. The black side skirts, recessed door handles and the embossed number 5 at the base of the C-pillar are some other attractive elements. The dynamically elongated proportions result in a strong rear end. The flat tail lights separated by a chrome strip expressively interpret the characteristic L-shape.
The dynamic character of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan can be further enhanced with the optional M Sport Package and M Sport Package Pro. At the market launch, the colour palette already includes three BMW Individual colours.
Driving pleasure and travel comfort combined with an air of innovation
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan offers the ideal environment for experiencing the typical BMW driving pleasure in everyday traffic and a high level of comfort on long-distance journeys. Generous space, modern functionality, a high level of acoustic comfort as well as high-quality, precision-crafted materials, outstanding workmanship and advanced digital services characterise the atmosphere inside.
The cockpit of the new BMW 5 Series features a significantly reduced number of buttons and controls compared to the previous model. This is achieved by the continuous digitisation of functions. The BMW Curved Display reinterprets the concept of a driver-oriented interior. The fully digital display system consists of a 12.3" Information Display and a 14.9" Control Display. The steering wheel has been redesigned, with a flattened lower section and haptic feedback on the control panels, as has the gearbox selector on the centre console. The optional BMW Interaction Bar is another important feature. This functional unit features backlighting and a crystal structure on its surface and extends the full width of the instrument panel up to the door panels, including touch-operated control surfaces.
For the first time in BMW : Fully vegan Inside
Newly designed sports seats are standard. The optional comfort seats offer a wide range of electric adjustments. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is the brand's first model to feature a fully vegan interior as standard, which includes the seat surfaces, dashboard and door panels as well as the steering wheel for the first time. The seat surfaces in the Veganza version are upholstered with leather-like properties and are available with optional perforated trim. Optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather trim in various two-tone variants.
The all-electric BMW i 5 M 60 xDrive is the top model
The all-electric BMW i5 is available with the extensively improved fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and is launched in two versions. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive delivers 601 hp* and features the familiar performance characteristics of the M models combined with special design features. Two fully integrated drive units on the front and rear axles make up an all-wheel electric drive system. The torque generated by the system reaches 820 Nm* when M Sport Boost or M Launch Control is activated. In this case, the BMW i5 M60 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 230 km/h.
The other version is the BMW i5 eDrive40. The electric motor drives the rear wheels and produces a maximum output of 340 hp and a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm in Sport Boost mode or with Launch Control activated. The BMW i5 eDrive40 accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and develops a maximum speed of 193 km/h.
The high-voltage battery is mounted at the bottom of the body, saving valuable space and offering a net energy content of 81.2 kWh. In addition to the efficient electric motors, the latest version of the adaptive energy recovery system and the intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the cabin, the drive system and the high-voltage battery contribute to the high autonomy. The corresponding values according to the WLTP standard are 455 - 516 km for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive and 477 - 582 km for the BMW i5 eDrive40. With the new MAX RANGE mode, the range can be increased by up to 25% if necessary by limiting power and speed and deactivating the comfort functions.
*when M Launch Control or M Sport Boost is activated.
Innovative solutions eCharging from the BMW Charging
The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) of the BMW i5 enables AC charging with up to 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. The high-voltage battery can be charged with DC power of up to 205 kW. For example, the battery charge level in the BMW i5 can be increased from 10 to 80% in about 30 minutes.
The new Connected Home Charging is offered for the BMW i5 as well as for the plug-in hybrid models. It creates the conditions for solar and optimised charging (stage 1) as well as cost-optimised charging under variable tariff contracts with energy providers (stage 2, from 2024). In addition, the offer of BMW Charging and strategic partner E.ON lays the foundation for networking with energy providers via two-way charging in future vehicle generations. The all-electric models in the new BMW 5 Series are also the first vehicles from the brand to be compatible with the Plug & Charge function that allows the vehicle to automatically certify itself at compatible public charging stations without the need for an app or charging card. A unique feature is the multi-contract option, which allows customers to digitally store up to five individual Plug & Charge-enabled power contracts from different providers in the vehicle.
New petrol and diesel engines diesel with mild hybrid technology 48- Was
The petrol and diesel engines of the BMW Group's new generation of Efficient Dynamics modular units will be offered selectively depending on the market. They now feature 48 Volt mild hybrid technology as a whole and are combined as standard with a new 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.
In the European market, the launch will see the four-cylinder BMW 520i Sedan with 208 hp, BMW 520d Sedan and BMW 520d xDrive Sedan with the latter two producing 197 hp. Outside Europe, other petrol engines are also available with four and six cylinders. The model range will be complemented in spring 2024 by two versions with the latest generation of plug-in hybrid engines. A new six-cylinder in-line diesel engine will be available for the BMW 5 Series Sedan from 2024. Another variant of the BMW i5 with electric all-wheel drive will also follow during 2024.
Unique balance between dynamic performance and comfort on the road
The BMW 5 Series Sedan's characteristic balance between sporty handling and high levels of comfort on long-distance journeys is once again enhanced in the new version of the model. Contributing to this are the car's wheelbase, which is the longest at the upper end of the mid-range vehicles, the increased width of the front and rear axle tracks, the near-perfect balance in terms of weight distribution between the two axles in a 50:50 ratio, the intelligent lightweight construction and the increased rigidity of the body/chassis connection.
The advanced chassis technology, as well as the control systems, has been tailored for each model to the weight balance associated with the respective drive technology. It includes direct wheel slip control, integrated braking and sports steering with variable ratio understeer as standard equipment. The M sports suspension, M sports braking system and the Adaptive Suspension Professional suspension (standard on the BMW i5 M60 xDrive) with electronically controlled dampers, Integral Active Steering and a dynamic management system along the vertical axis are available as options. The optional Adaptive M Suspension Professional also includes Active Roll Stabilisation with Active Roll Comfort. Light-alloy wheels in 18" or 19" (for the BMW i5 and plug-in hybrid models) are standard equipment. Light alloy wheels in 21" in combination with performance tyres are offered as an option.
High-level automated driving experience: new Highway Assistant , unique Active Lane Change Assistant
A significantly expanded range of systems for automated driving and parking is available as standard or as an option for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. An innovative technology package creates the conditions for their outstanding functionality.
The highlight of the range is the optional Driving Assistant Professional which includes Steering & Lane Control Assist and Distance Control with Stop & Go function. In the US and Canadian markets, as well as in Germany, it includes Highway Assistant, which takes over steering control on a motorway with clear lane markings. At driving speeds of up to 130 km/h, the driver can take his hands off the wheel and place them somewhere comfortable, as long as he keeps a close eye on the traffic. In a world first, the system in the new BMW 5 Series now includes Active Lane Change Assistant with eye activation. This comfort function now achieves a new level of interaction between the driver and the vehicle. The vehicle suggests a lane change which can be performed for the first time by looking in the outside mirror to confirm the change. Active Lane Change Assistant automatically takes over the necessary steering wheel movements if the traffic situation allows.
The new BMW 5 Series Sedan comes standard with Parking Assistant, including Reversing Assist. With the optional Parking Assistant Professional, automated parking and manoeuvring up to 200 metres can be controlled in the vehicle or via smartphone outside the vehicle.
Intuitive operation and new digital experiences: BMW iDrive with " QuickSelect " and BMW Operating System 8.5
The improved BMW iDrive display and control system with "QuickSelect" also contributes to the distinctive driving and travel experience in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. It is based on the BMW Operating System 8.5 and features a redesigned home screen with vertically arranged function icons on the driver's side. "QuickSelect" allows direct access to functions without the need to switch to submenus. This means that the system has an improved menu structure, similar to that found in consumer electronics devices.
The new BMW iDrive is also combined with the BMW Curved Display and Personal Assistant - BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. It is consistently designed to work via the touchscreen and with natural language. In addition, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan also features steering wheel buttons and the BMW iDrive Controller in the centre console. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes BMW Head-Up Display and Augmented View on the control screen or instrument panel. The BMW Natural Interaction option for controlling functions with gestures is also available.
