Η Peugeot dares to "Level Up" in the third generation of the popular 3008, cashing in on its success. It raises the level, aiming to set a milestone in its class. At Topspeed.gr we had the opportunity to drive the GT version with the engine of the 1.2 Hybrid and e-DCS6 automatic transmission of 136 horsepower in our regular weekly symbiosis.
Period of maturity
The first generation of the 3008 was introduced in 2007 and immediately gained the interest of consumers as an MPV with distinctive crossover elements and alternative aesthetics, which remained in production until 2016, when it was replaced by the second generation, with a clear SUV orientation and space design, attracting the interest of consumers and becoming a Best Seller. It was replaced in 2023 by our test model, with new more dynamic aesthetics with more confidence, now passing through the years of maturity.
The evolution of the design philosophy
The new Peugeot 3008 introduces a new design philosophy as an evolution of the French company's culture, in tune with the modern era.
The front end in particular features two-tiered Matrix Led headlights, with the slim upper part giving an aggressive "look" and the lower part signed "lion's teeth" and framed on the massive bumper with the integrated imposing grille, reminiscent of the lion's mouth.
The profile adopts a sleek and dynamic Coupe silhouette, making the new brand identity clear. The strong ribs and edges combined with the chunky surfaces seal the new sporty character of the car.
The rear ends in a dynamic tail with a sloping roof, incorporating a discreet spoiler. The sharp edges and slim single light body with signature LED graphics as the "lion's claws", combined with the large bumper with a sharp aerodynamic diffuser, give it the required dynamic appearance.
Exciting experience
The cabin will delight even the most discerning with its totally driver-centric design. The construction and assembly is at a top level, reaching the premium offerings of the market, with a choice of excellent soft materials and finishes in the trim.
In particular, the distinctive two-level dashboard is evolving and impressive. The 'L' shaped centre console separates the front seats in an impressive futuristic design, featuring smart pockets and a hidden inductive charging cradle for the mobile phone and incorporating the audio and driver's choice switch.
The dashboard is turned towards the driver, emphasising its driver-centric character, which is the focus of the new generation Panoramic i-Cockpit with the 21-inch high definition curved screen with very good and modern graphics.
At The smaller touchscreen is home to the i-Toggles digital switches and the automatic gearbox selector.
It all contributes to class-leading ergonomics and functionality, providing the required information in easy-to-read places on the raised position of the panoramic display, while the switches are located in the right places to keep the driver's attention on the road.
The 8-colour "ambient" night lighting is impressive, creating an atmospheric feeling in the cabin, aimed at creating a relaxed mood during evening driving.
The cabin architecture achieves exemplary space management with high levels of practicality, making life easier for passengers with ample space.
The ergonomic seats are heated and cooled, with 8 massage programs and top-of-the-line side and lumbar support, raising comfort levels to the limits of the thrilling experience.
In terms of luggage volume, it has a capacity of 520 litres, while with the rear seat backs folded, it reaches 1,480 litres.
Efficient Downsizing
Under the bonnet, the 3008 houses the efficient 1.2-litre 1.2-litre Stellantis three-cylinder petrol engine from the PureTech family, producing 136 hp and 230 Nm of torque, which operates on the Miller cycle and is mated to a mild 48V hybrid system consisting of a modern permanent magnet electric motor with a maximum output of 21 PS and 51 Nm of torque and integrated into the new 6-speed e-DCS6 dual-clutch transmission. Energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery with a total capacity of 0.9 kWh and a usable capacity of 0.43 kWh, which is mounted on the floor under the front passenger.
The "King" shows his teeth
All of the above features make up a very interesting car, which is eagerly asking to reveal its driving advantages. From theory to practice to get to know it in every possible condition and network.
In the city drives like a typical C-SUV. Caution is needed in narrow streets due to its bulk and it is preferable to drive through central arteries. The small turning circle of 10.6 m gives it a relative agility, tempering its exuberant dimensions. In its passage it draws the attention of passers-by, thanks to its impressive appearance and the fact that it is now starting to circulate on the road.
In the mountain and rural network highlights the robust chassis of Stellantis' new STLA Medium platform. The soft suspension is balanced and the feel is ideal, focusing on comfort with an emphasis on safety. The engine is supple and linear, yet is the standard solution, which in practice means it drives the 3008's heavy bodywork decently, making it a quality ride and leisurely driving SUV.
On the motorway the ride quality and sound insulation exceeds expectations, reaching the levels of larger Premium offerings, even at high speeds, especially the outstanding aerodynamic performance that contributes to this.
General the new 3008 is pleasant in its own way, showing promise for its more powerful versions. With three driving profiles, (Eco, Normal and Sport), it adapts to the driver's mood. By selecting the Sport program, the suspension and steering are stiffened, increasing the sporty feel. The operation of the automatic transmission is direct and smooth, ideally supporting the petrol engine. The average combined consumption reached 7.1 litres/100 km, on the motorway in typical driving at 6.5 litres/100 km, and in the urban cycle at 7.5, more reminiscent of a full hybrid than a mild.
For those who want it all
Noticeably upgraded in all areas, with a strikingly dynamic design, an interior that flirts with the idea of an "exciting experience" with futuristic aesthetics and plenty of space, as well as exemplary road handling, the new 3008 is not aimed exclusively at family drivers, like its predecessor, but "winks" at the Premium market, emphasizing its presence to those who, with the purchase of a car, want it all.
Intermediate option
Pricewise, the 3008 is above the Maistream market average and below the Premium market average, confirming that it is an intermediate option. In the entry-level Allure version the 3008 Hybrid is priced from €36,900, while the top GT in our test car starts from 40.900 €.
