The luggage compartment, just below the sleek front hood of the electric Mustang Mach-E known to EV enthusiasts as the "frunk", is now made from recycled plastic using not one, not two, but 115 yogurt containers.

Until now, the frunk of Ford's innovative, all-electric SUV that came to change the face of the electric vehicle category was made of six independent plastic parts. But now, thanks to the restless spirit of the folks at Ford, the new Mustang Mach-E's frunk is created as a single part, saving the weight equivalent of three sugar packets.

The Mustang Mach-E's front storage compartment, with a useful capacity of 100 litres, is equipped with a drain plug and is extremely easy to clean, making it the perfect place for owners to carry wet or muddy items, such as hiking boots and diving or climbing equipment.

"We are proud of our team, which is constantly looking for opportunities like this to provide solutions for the environment, our customers and Ford," said Donna Dickson, Mustang Mach-E, chief program engineer. "Our customers love the Mustang Mach-E and the new frunk is a great example that we don't rest on our laurels, but work every day to make every aspect of our vehicle better, whether it's new materials or parameters like over-the-air software updates."

Increasing the sustainability of plastics in vehicle design can help reduce their impact on the environment. Several studies have shown that recycling can reduce the carbon footprint of some plastic parts by 70% to 90%.

"In addition to reducing emissions from our vehicles, we are committed to increasing the recycled and sustainable materials in our vehicles," said Cynthia Williams, global director of sustainability, certification and compliance at Ford. "Our ambition is to use only recycled or renewable plastic in our vehicles and this innovation helps us get closer to that goal."
