The electric transmission
The all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology introduces an innovative electric drive system featuring individual wheel drive with a total output of 432 kW and 1,164 Nm of torque. This system uses virtual block differentials created through torque vectoring, eschewing traditional mechanical components for increased performance.
Positioned at the cutting edge of Mercedes-Benz Group innovations, this is the first mass-produced model to use the individual drive system. The four engines integrated in the ladder chassis - two on each front and rear axle - are connected by short half-axles. This allows the rear motors to be connected directly to the chassis, with each motor producing a maximum power output of 108 kW, ultimately resulting in the vehicle's significant overall power and torque. The coordination of torque distribution is managed by the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and centralized control of the powertrain (CPC), ensuring optimal traction exactly where it is needed.
In terms of performance, the electric G-Class accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h. Thanks to the immediate availability of maximum torque from the electric motors, the vehicle has remarkable tractive power and fine control, which proves particularly beneficial on difficult gradients and loose terrain.
The vehicle's innovative use of torque vectoring allows the creation of virtual differential locks, distributing torque to each wheel with precision. This function is activated within seconds, ensuring that the G-Class maintains stability and directional control on steep climbs and descents, even in the most challenging landscapes.
This system facilitates fully variable torque distribution to the wheels, maximising traction and agility, while eliminating the torque steer usually seen during cornering. The G-Class' agility and agility remain non-negotiable, even when the virtual differential lockers are engaged. With fully automatic control, there is no need for manual intervention, simplifying operation and enhancing safety in challenging driving conditions.
The battery
At the heart of every electric vehicle is the high-voltage battery. The new G-Class electric car features a two-layer lithium-ion battery consisting of 216 cells distributed in twelve modules interspersed with three cooling layers. The battery is securely embedded in a ladder-type frame made of steel up to four millimetres thick, providing a low centre of gravity and significantly enhancing the rigidity of the vehicle. Built into a torsion-resistant shell, the battery is well protected from water and dirt, making the vehicle fully equipped for demanding off-road adventures. The battery has a useful capacity of 116 kWh, enabling the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology to achieve a range of up to 473 kilometres in accordance with WLTP standards.
