Driving the Honda CR-V Hybrid

When, the 1995, first presented in the CR-V, η Honda said that his name is an acronym for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle". Clicking on platform of the (amazing) Civic, with design and... identity SUV, the CR-V, in the His 5th generation anymore, it is not one more compact crossover SUV. It is a "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," and a "Compact Recreational Vehicle" which passed to hybrid era.

No more fights between the "hard-core" Honda hardliners (and not only) that... the electric are discharged because they lose the feeling and... get bored of the charge and the fans of electric who say that electricity is the future. Η middle roador better yet... both. hybrid that is, it is the best solution. The truth is that it has big plate moving around spending 0 lt/100 km in the city, having on the other hand the security of autonomy that gives you a tank of gasoline and an ICE. Uh, that "plate" and much more is on offer in the CR-V.

Classic and futuristic design of the CR-V Hybrid

The differentso, for this SUV, it's under the bonnet his. There, they (co)exist and (re)work three different engines, the Hybrid Performance PMMD systems). The two electric motors and the two-litre i-VTEC, operating on the Atkinson cycle, yield a total of 185 hp (145 for the petrol engine only) and 315 Nm of torque. These three motors work together with a central power control unit and a innovative single-speed transmission.

This Honda is a hybrid and it screams...

In practice, if you don't notice the flags that say "hybrid" in imposing, exuberant, muscular (and aerodynamic, since it is developed with computational fluid dynamics, having even an electrical system Active Shutter Grille which opens the air duct louvers only when air flow is needed in the engine room), you will do it sitting on the Inside his. Because with the "good morning" you will find out that where there should (?) be the levers for the gearbox, there are four buttons marked "P,R,N,D" and next to them three others marked "Sport", "Econ" and "EV". Well, if you don't get it now, we're telling you it's a hybrid.

Full, spacious, practical, with a familiar Honda feel, the CR-V's interior has a touch of luxury

The interior, by the way, balances between the modern and classical, with the colour screens (7 inch in the centre), but also the stylish leather and wood trim and is generally spacious, with plenty of room for small items, overflowing with equipment, with excellent assembly and quality of materials and welcoming. The its spaces are on a... funny level large and comfortable for five people to travel, while the flat luggage space of 497 litres (it loses 64 litres from the lithium-ion battery on the floor) is enough. Besides, it also fits a... 20-wheeler!

In the flat 497-litre luggage compartment, we chose to load a... tyre

The only thing this writer can complain about is the CR-V's infotainment system, which takes some getting used to, but is complete and once you get the hang of it, easy to use. I liked the fact that the doors open at an angle of 90 degrees about and that the trunk door opens and closes at the touch of a button, but most importantly that there are many smart solutions for the configuration of the interiors, such as the front armrest which is... giant. The seats are comfortable and offer good support, while the driver has excellent location and visibility, but also full information from the digital instrument panel which has no tachometer, but a digital arched bar in place, which essentially tells you how much energy the car consumes when you step on the right foot, or how much it recovers when you lift it.

Comfortable seats, excellent (panoramic) driving position and plenty of space for small (and large) items

But how is it on the road; At EV Mode, the CR-V can run purely on electricity for just 2 km, but in the movement essentially alternate energy sources depending on the one that is most advantageous. So, in the version AWD, with the combination of two (okay, three) motors, the CR-V Hybrid does the sprints from a standstill at 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds while its top speed is limited to 180 km/h.

The clever thing about the CR-V is that, despite the absence of a gear selector and the futuristic instrument panel, you quickly feel like you're in a familiar place. There's nothing alien about the interior

Necessary stop to knock down an innocent furnace somewhere: I'll say (write, actually) a good word for a CVT-type transmission that I love so much (#not). CVT boxes make cars run like giant scooters, but here, Honda did a good job with the e-CVT. Because it is essentially a one-ratio box, a sub-multiplication unit which creates direct transmission with a stable relationship between moving parts and smoother torque transfer. So you get an immediate response to the throttle, with a linear feel and without even knowing when you're switching from one power source to another. In other circumstances I'd grumble, but in this particular case, this gearbox is a necessary... good thing, as it contributes to the economy and general sense of comfort that the high rolling quality and the top sound insulation of the CR-V (that's what Active Sound Control is for).

Imposing front end of the all-wheel drive Honda CR-V

In the field of Consumption, the CR-V hybrid shows that the high technology performs as it should in practice. The average consumption with the heavy foot of the (sub)writer was close to 7 lt/100 km while if you move more in the city where the hybrid system is favoured (e.g. you are looking to park without stress, since you are basically moving with the electric motor) you can come close to 5,5 lt/100 km given by Honda as average consumption. In general, with the right pedal permanently... on the floor and in non-urban environment and pressure, the average consumption of the SUV of 1,670 kg equals those supermini of which are also more agile and however not reaching double-digit numbers. CO2 emissions, incidentally, are very low (from 120 to 126 g/km).

Not that the back is not. Notice the great distance from the ground

On the roadnow, the CR-V is quite delightful. For this, not only the Box -with the excellent sound insulation- and the post (note the multi-link rear). But also and especially the Honda i-MMD technology, which intelligently and automatically selects between three drivers with the aim of achieving the best possible performance. With EV Drive (for which there is a corresponding button), the lithium-ion battery provides immediate effect to the electric motor. With the hybrid drive ο petrol engine gives power to a motor - generator which in turn provides power to the electric motor drive and with the engine drive the petrol engine directly connected to the wheels through a locking clutch.

Passengers, front and rear, will enjoy trips and journeys because of the excellent sound insulation, space, comfort and ride quality

Although most of the time it works between Hybrid Drive and EV, the ideal driving mode is chosen according to the circumstances and the intentions of the person who... holds the wheel. Η a sub-multiplication unit in place of the conventional gearbox, creates direct transmission with a stable relationship between moving parts and smoother torque transfer. Thus, with the help of the eCVT, in essence you do not perceive the alternation from each power source to the other, with the torque transfer from transmission to be imperceptible, there is a linear sense at the accelerator and throughout the acceleration, while the Active Sound Control offers natural sound of acceleration which is proportional to the engine speed.

It goes without saying that every time you let off the pedal of the gas, you charge the CR-V's batteries. Him rhythm of regenerative braking you define it by the paddles which do not change gears (logical, since it has only one gear), but control the system Deceleration Paddle Selector and the rate of deceleration. I should note here that for days I was trying to understand what the paddles were for, since I didn't change the relationships (as I thought I should).

In conclusion, whether I've covered everything about the CR-V or not (which I haven't, since I haven't written a word about its off-road capabilities-but all I have to say is its increased height off the ground, since I haven't tested it off-road), I come to the following conclusion: That it is nice to move with the silent electric motor looking for parking, spending literally 0 euro per kilometrewhile at the same time you have the "security" of the autonomy of the UCIto make your journey. When there is a "fight" between the electric or the AC solution, the answer of the middle solution, i.e. "both!", seems to be ideally. Therefore, the Honda CR-V has something of the... ideal!
