Peugeot city cars: from 104 to 208

Just one... ride in a Peugeot 208, whether it's electric or with an internal combustion engine, is enough to make you think that the French have done a great job in city cars. In all this technology that has been "enlisted" for our daily commute through the city jungle, to achieve the result we... see, something else has played a part: Peugeot's long experience of city cars.

Half a century, during which he has built 25 million city cars, is not a short time. The history of the French marque in the category began with the launch of the Peugeot 104 in 1972. Between the Peugeot 104 and today's Peugeot 208, ten generations of city models succeeded each other in the Peugeot range.

Remaining true to its goals over time, PEUGEOT has always built cars that appeal to discerning consumers who are looking for a modern, compact car for urban commuting, economical to use, without compromising comfort, safety, technology and practicality. Today, Peugeot is leading the way in the super mini city segment with the popular Peugeot 208 and is ushering in a new era with the all-electric version of the model which offers quieter and cleaner mobility than ever before.

The start of the city car range was marked by the launch of the PEUGEOT 104. Being versatile, stylish and economical to use, this super mini made an impression from its launch at the 1972 Paris Motor Show and has been making its mark ever since. With stunning handling for its class and an efficient one-litre engine, this model was built in three different body types, fulfilling the needs of its customers to the full.

THE 200 SERIES IN CITY CARS

PEUGEOT 205 (1983-1998): the legend

The PEUGEOT 205 introduces PEUGEOT to the modern era. Its design, performance and range of versions (petrol, diesel, 3 or 5-door, convertible or van) have always had something to say to the general public. It defined the size of cars in its class for years: 3.70 metres! Its GTi versions (with 105, 115 and 130 bhp) made a name for themselves and made a special impression on those who prefer high-performance cars. Today, the 205 in GTi versions is a collector's item and... very expensive. As for its racing successes, they underlined the history of motorsport.

PEUGEOT 206 (1998-2012): the French best-seller of all time!

The 206 "shone" in the WRC as well

With more than 8 million sales, the 206 is the ultimate French best-seller of all time in automotive history! Its bold design and dynamic handling made it stand out. Available in two versions, SW and coupe-cabrio, PEUGEOT broke all records. If the PEUGEOT 205 shone in the World Rally Championship (with two titles in 1985 and 1986), the PEUGEOT 206 did even better, with three consecutive titles from 2000 to 2003. The PEUGEOT 206 was also the star of a legendary advertisement by an Indian artist who built his own 206.

"Sculpteur", meaning "Sculpture", was the title of the 206 advertisement in 2002.

PEUGEOT 207 (2006-2014)

The 207 with the 1.6-litre THR turbocharged engine was - and still is - popular in Greece

The launch of the PEUGEOT 207 marked PEUGEOT's upgrade in the premium market. With a body length of 4.03m, 20cm longer than the PEUGEOT 206, it offers significantly more space. In addition, finish and comfort have been significantly improved in a range that remains rich in terms of engines and bodywork.

PEUGEOT 208 I (2012-2020): the conception of the i-Cockpit

The first generation of the PEUGEOT 208 is characterised by a kind of return to more compact dimensions - but with more space than the PEUGEOT 207 - and a change in design compared to the 206/207. This change is very evident inside, where the PEUGEOT 208 launches the new i-Cockpit concept, dedicated to driving pleasure. And to fully satisfy driving enthusiasts, the PEUGEOT 208 GTi is PEUGEOT's first city car to exceed 200 horsepower!

  • Engine horsepower: From 68 to 208 hp
  • 2.158.177 cars produced

PEUGEOT 208 second generation (2019 to date): dynamic and electric

With the second generation of the PEUGEOT 208, PEUGEOT is making its entry into the 2020s. Its bold design makes it stand out and is in the same vein as the PEUGEOT 508 and 3008, while also giving a nod to the PEUGEOT 205. Above all, the PEUGEOT 208 marks the entry of city cars into the world of electrification. Since the launch of the model, the penetration of this electric version already reaches 16% of the 208 produced! Available also in petrol and diesel engines, this new generation also offers advanced connectivity systems, which has been rewarded with the coveted title of Car of the Year 2020.

THE 100 SERIES IN CITY CARS

PEUGEOT 104 (1972-1988): a big PEUGEOT in a small body

"The 3.58 metres of PEUGEOT!" the slogan of the advertisement was simple and clear. For the first time, a small 4-door car offered comfort, space, safety and performance that matched larger cars. PEUGEOT also offered a 3-door version.

  • Length: 3.30 m (3 doors) or 3.58 m (4 doors)
  • Engine horsepower: From 46 to 93 hp
  • 1.624.992 cars produced

PEUGEOT 106 (1991-2003): city and... electric!

The electric version of the 106, which became famous in Greece because of... Rallye

With its modern design and generous space, combined with a body length significantly shorter than the PEUGEOT 205, the PEUGEOT 106 was a great success for city dwellers. With a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, it also experimented with an electric motor in 1995, with a battery or which offered a 90 km range! A truly impressive performance considering the technology of the time, just a quarter of a century before the e-208! In Greece, however, we completely disregarded the electric 106, since we were too... in love with the charms of the now legendary Rallye.

  • Length: 3.58 m (3 doors) or 3.68 m (5 doors)
  • Engine horsepower: From 45 to 120 hp
  • 2.798.246 cars produced

PEUGEOT 1007 (2004-2009): with sliding doors!

The PEUGEOT 1007 is a combination of innovations. First of all, it is the first in the world with two electrically sliding doors (Pininfarina's idea). Secondly, with its unique architecture, it offers exceptional interior space offering a wide range of personalisation possibilities, long before it became fashionable. Despite being ahead of its time, the PEUGEOT 1007 was not as successful as expected.

  • Length: 3,73 m (3 doors)
  • Engine horsepower: From 70 to 110 hp
  • 124.200 cars produced

PEUGEOT 107 (2005-2014): small and beautiful

The PEUGEOT 107 has a particularly successful design with large headlights that make the grille look distinctive and a special tailgate made of tinted glass that makes it look elegant. It is the smallest car of the brand, which, however, is available in a 5-door, 4-seat version. It has, in short, all the ingredients for a successful city car!

  • Length: 3,43 m (with 3 or 5 doors)
  • Engine horsepower: 54 or 68 hp
  • 819.062 cars produced

PEUGEOT 108 (2014-2021): coming of age!

The PEUGEOT 108 looks a lot like the PEUGEOT 107, but it has grown. Of course, it is ideal for city driving. It has, however, moved into the premium market with its unique design and interior finish; it was also available in a TOP version with a convertible roof.

  • Length: 3,46 m (with 3 or 5 doors)
