The premiere of Alfa Romeo Plug-in Hybrid Q4 Tonale marks the completion of the range of the new model, which introduces the Italian brand to the era of electrified drive, while keeping its DNA unchanged since 1910. The top-of-the-range version of the Tonale continues the brand's transformation by combining maximum efficiency with a sporty character. With more than 80km of electric range in urban conditions and a total range of more than 600km, it has average CO2 just 26 g/km.
It is a version designed to meet the needs of customers who more than ever are looking for technology, comfort, safety and environmental friendliness, along with a sporty character. Thanks to its premium spaciousness, rolling quality, quiet operation and overall comfort, the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 is the ideal model for both daily city commutes and long journeys. Combined with cutting-edge technology and impeccable quality, the model's dynamic features clearly demonstrate Alfa Romeo's vision of redefining the concept of "sport" for the 21ο century, as suggested by the new "electrified" biscione that appears on the left rear window, just above the charging point access port.
The Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 will take the brand through the "from zero to zero" process, where from zero electrification in early 2022 to having a 100% all-electric range in 2027. This path in just 5 years will make it the brand with the fastest path to carbon neutrality.
Efficiency at its service DNA of the brand
Thanks to the new Plug-in Hybrid Q4 powertrain, the Tonale is equipped with a set of cutting-edge technology that offers top efficiency while respecting the brand's distinctive character. With a total output of 280 hp, the hybrid system consists of a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an output of 180 hp mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and driving the front wheels and an electric motor with a maximum output of 90kW and 250Nm of torque driving the rear wheels. The system operates at 306V and the 15.5kWh lithium-ion battery ensures an all-electric range of more than 80km in urban conditions. The total range of more than 600km make the model one of the most efficient Plug-in Hybrid SUVs. The CO emissions of the vehicle are 600,000 CO2 of 26 g/km reduce the Tonale range's emissions by 40%, while the version's average WLTP cycle consumption is just 1.14 l/100 km. Aiming for maximum efficiency and ease of use, a full battery charge takes less than 2.5 hours thanks to the integrated charger that supports up to 7.4 kW of power.
Equipped with the Q4 all-wheel drive system, the Plug-in Hybrid Tonale offers the ultimate driving experience. Low fuel consumption and correspondingly low emissions are combined with a high output of 280 hp and excellent performance, with acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h taking just 6.2 seconds. and a top speed of 135 km/h in pure electric mode and 206 km/h in hybrid mode. At the same time, acceleration is always instantaneous thanks to the torque of the electric motor.
New functions for even higher efficiency
The circular dial of the Alfa D.N.A. configuration system is already a symbol of the efficient sporting character of the brand's models. The system has been re-engineered to support the operation of the Q4 all-wheel drive system, and more generally the new Plug-in Hybrid system.
In particular the option "Dynamic" aims to maximise the performance of both engines, while offering even more responsive controls. Similarly, the option "Natural" optimises operation for the lowest possible consumption, without compromising on performance. Finally, the option "Advance Efficiency" adjusts the system for maximum efficiency and energy recovery and is ideal for urban traffic.
The all-electric drive option offers a relaxing driving experience, while the E-Save function allows the battery to be charged - in addition to being recovered during deceleration - by the engine. The choice of E-Save and a range of other features related to all-electric drive can be set by the driver via the multimedia system screen.
Benchmark in road behaviour
The Tonale Plug-in Hybrid offers a safe, comfortable and enjoyable driving experience thanks to a range of exclusive technical options. The Q4 all-wheel drive system manages the distribution of torque provided by the 180 hp thermal engine to the front wheels and that of the 90 kW electric motor that drives the rear wheels. The absence of a central transmission axle makes the management of wheel drive more efficient and reduces the vehicle's weight. Like the other Tonale versions, the Plug-in Hybrid Q4 has the most direct steering in the class, the innovative brake-by-wire IBS braking system, FSD (Frequency-Selective-Damping) technology shock absorbers and electronically controlled suspension in the Veloce version.
Quality and technology for a premium driving experience
The comfort and quality offered by the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 make it ideal for everyday commuting, long journeys and short trips on beautiful routes. Spaciousness is also at the top of the class, as is the ride quality, which is now further enhanced by the quiet operation ensured by the all-electric drive. The extensive comfort and safety equipment includes a full range of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), making the Tonale also one of the safest models in the class, having received the highest distinction in EuroNCAP testing with 5 stars.
Finally, the model's advanced technology platform features a state-of-the-art multimedia system, OTA upgrades via the internet ("Over The Air"), as well as upgraded remote control functions via the Alfa Connected Services application.
Also upgraded on the Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 is the NFT (Non-Fungible-Token) tamper-proof certificate, a world first for Alfa Romeo in the automotive industry, offering a digital proof that increases the resale value of the car. If the driver so wishes, the NFT on the Tonale certifies the total kilometres the car has travelled and how many of these have been covered in all-electric mode.
The Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4 will be available initially in the Veloce version, followed by the Ti version and the Edizione Speciale version for a limited time at the model launch. Orders for the new model are expected to start in the near future.
