The new CUPRA Leon - in both 5-door hatchback and Sportstourer versions - comes to reinforce the brand's ambitions. With its new DNA design language, integration of next-generation eHybrid technology, greater digitalisation and sustainability features, it will enhance the brand's prestige, taking it to a new level.
"The CUPRA Leon brings together the key elements that every brand model should have: design, performance and dynamism." said Wayne Griffiths, CEO of CUPRA. "The new CUPRA Leon embraces the future with next-generation powertrains and improved material quality with a more environmentally conscious approach to performance."
Last year, CUPRA achieved a new milestone and surpassed half a million cars delivered since its launch as an autonomous brand in 2018. The new CUPRA Leon has been redesigned and improved to continue the success story.
External Design
The new CUPRA Leon 5D and CUPRA Leon Sportstourer are designed to impress and excite. Each vehicle, regardless of body style, captures the brand's DNA with a completely new face, stronger character and sophisticated sportiness to match their character.
The new CUPRA Leon introduces the new DNA of the CUPRA design language, with a shark's snout-like front end, triangular LED matrix headlights and a large, bold lower opening. From the front, the new CUPRA Leon exudes power and determination, incorporating the CUPRA logo directly into the bonnet above the large grille (standard: Full LED) and accentuated by the optional matrix LED headlights that incorporate the design signature with three illuminated triangles framed within a triangle.
The dynamic image at the rear of the new CUPRA Leon 5D and Sportstourer is enhanced by the volume provided by the V-shaped tailgate, which is connected to the rear blister running along the side of the car. The two-tone muscular bumper suggests refinement, sportiness and quality, while contributing to the car's lowered appearance.
The LED lighting technology is highlighted with the same triangular design philosophy as on the front of the CUPRA. But the new CUPRA Leon 5D and Sportstourer add an extra stylistic touch with the CUPRA logo positioned centrally between the rear lights alongside the illuminated Leon name. The rear reflectors are also triangular, completing the design philosophy of the CUPRA family.
The proportions of the new CUPRA Leon, whatever the version, are enhanced by a collection of new wheel designs - nine different 18" and 19" alloy wheels are available. The range includes forged wheels that help to reduce weight and improve the vehicle's dynamics.
Customers can choose from nine different colours, including the new and exclusive Century Bronze Matt and Enceladus Grey Matt. The colour palette is complemented by Magnetic Tech Matt, the new Fiord Blue and Taiga Grey, as well as Midnight Black, Glacial White, Magnetic Tech and Graphene Grey.
Interior Design
Approaching the car, the CUPRA Leon greets the driver and passenger with a dynamic choreography of lighting at the front and rear of the car, while projecting the CUPRA logo on the ground. This is the first step towards an exciting experience
The familiar CUPRA steering wheel with its satellite-like paddles and buttons - standard on DSG versions - ensure maximum control and enhance the driving experience, the comfort and stability offered by the sports or bucket seats, the digital architecture and the completely renewed material choices all point to a superior vehicle with enhanced performance credentials.
The materials have been selected with quality criteria and sustainability in mind. The surfaces of the dashboard use three-dimensional parametric patterns to ensure an excellent visual feel. The centre console has been redesigned with greater attention to detail, while improved materials enhance the quality of the interior, such as the soft material on the side of the centre console with subtle stitching. In addition, the copper accents found around the perimeter of the cabin, including the air vents, further enhance the aesthetics.
The available seating options for the new CUPRA Leon and CUPRA Leon Sportstourer are in keeping with the style and character of the driver, while materials are selected for sustainability. The sports seats use fabric upholstery, while the bucket seats are upholstered in either recycled microfibres at a rate of 73% - with progressive laser perforation - or from eco-leather. These come as a continuation of CUPRA's efforts to make the brand and the automotive industry in general more sustainable for customers. Finally, CUPBucket seats achieve an incredible balance of design and environmental sustainability. The CUP Bucket upholstery is made from recycled SEAQUAL® YARN fabric as well as DINAMICA with 73% recycled polyester. CUPBucket seats offer a lower, more ergonomic and sporty riding position.
In combination with the CUPBuckets, interior elements such as the dashboard, centre console and door handles have an Enceladus grey finish, while the satellite-like steering wheel buttons are painted in gloss black with the details on the air vents and centre console in dark chrome.
Particular emphasis has been placed on the digital driver experience. A new and improved HMI interface is used on the digital instrument panel behind the steering wheel, as well as on the larger 12.9" infotainment system, which features a retro-lit slider.
The infotainment system features an improved App Bar, widgets and Clima Bar for an easy-to-use user interface. It is the epitome of simplicity, personalisation and innovative design. Control of the air conditioning system is now seamlessly integrated into the main unit display, making all vehicle functions and assistance systems accessible with a single click, combining digital and physical interaction.
High fidelity sound system in collaboration with Sennheiser
The CUPRA Leon incorporates a new optional 12-speaker high-fidelity audio system developed in collaboration with the audio experts at Sennheiser Mobility. The high-power 390-watt system immerses the driver and passengers in a unique audio experience. It is an audio technology that incorporates Sennheiser's AMBEO Concerto software, which is able to identify the fundamental components of music, including various musical instruments, as well as space-related information, redistributing it throughout the car's interior. This software delivers pure, signature Sennheiser sound, created by leveraging the company's long history and ensuring today's artists and music professionals have reliable solutions.
Drive systems
The new CUPRA Leon is available with four different powertrain technologies - TSI (petrol), eTSI (mild hybrid), TDI (diesel) and a new generation of eHybrid (plug-in hybrid) engines. The powertrain options deliver power from 150PS to 333PS for hatchback and Sportstourer versions.
TSI (petrol)
Internal combustion engines remain the mainstay of the new CUPRA Leon's powertrain range, with new options being added. All engines are turbocharged with direct injection, delivering power from 150PS to 333PS to provide the dynamics of a high-performance vehicle.
The range includes a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 150PS, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and available in both the hatchback and Sportstourer models.
Even higher in terms of performance, the new CUPRA Leon hatchback offers a 2.0-litre power unit with 300PS. This front-wheel-drive version uses a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission to transfer power to the wheels, while an integrated front differential lock (VAQ) helps to better control the vehicle's power delivery. The system takes measurements from multiple sources: steering angle, wheel rotation speed and body roll along the transverse axis, increasing confidence and trust in dynamic driving scenarios.
The new CUPRA Leon Sportstourer features two unique engines. A 2.0-litre TSI 204PS engine with 4Drive technology and DSG dual-clutch transmission.
The most powerful engine in the range, a 333PS two-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, also mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox, introduces a new drive mode in which the drivetrain is tuned for track driving by CUPRA engineers. It also features torque distribution technology (torque splitter) and optional brakes of Akebono. This makes it the most powerful CUPRA Leon ever.
Especially for this engine an exclusive CUPRA Mode has been developed, with optimised settings for the throttle and gearbox response for track driving, high dynamic torque response when the throttle is left open for a long time, an illuminated gear shift indicator and an engine tuning carried out at the Technical Centre in Martorell.
Mounted on the rear axle, the torque splitter system is electrohydraulically controlled by two independent clutches providing control of the torque reaching each rear wheel. This means that it can vary the torque between the left and right rear wheels in the corners, giving the CUPRA Leon Sportstourer VZ even more versatility when the driving gets more demanding.
The chassis system of the CUPRA Leon Sportstourer allowed engineers to include a Drift Mode for track use. In this mode, the ESC is in sport mode and using torque splitter technology, full power can be directed to a rear wheel, helping the car to drift. It is also possible to completely disengage ESC (ESC Off).
Where there are high demands on the braking system, the CUPRA Leon hatchback 2.0 TSI 300PS and the CUPRA Leon Sportstourer 2.0 TSI 333PS rely on the standard 18" brakes. Brakes with six-piston calipers from the Akebono (375mm x 36mm) with reliable performance, whatever the requirements.
eTSI (mild hybrid)
The CUPRA Leon is available in a mild hybrid version (eTSI). With this, both the 5-door version and the Sportstourer will offer even greater levels of efficiency. The system, which is available with a new 1.5-litre petrol engine delivering 150PS (110kW), exclusively paired with the DSG gearbox, marries 48V mild hybrid technology with the internal combustion engine, increasing the efficiency of electrification.
The system uses a 48V starter-generator and a 48V lithium-ion battery. The improvement in fuel efficiency is achieved, in part, because the system allows the CUPRA Leon to drive with the engine off in certain driving scenarios, recover energy during braking and support the engine with electric assist. The system has been improved and the engine is now started via the 48V system, making the whole process even smoother (compared to the previous 12V system).
TDI (diesel)
A diesel engine is also part of the powertrain range of the new CUPRA Leon, making it an important option for certain markets and customers. In response to requirements, the 2.0-litre TDI is mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox delivering 150PS.
eHybrid (plug–in hybrid)
With the new generation of the plug-in hybrid powertrain, CUPRA proves once again that electrification is a perfect match for performance.
The new CUPRA Leon - in both the 5-door and Sportstourer versions - is available with two options of next-generation eHybrid powertrains with 204PS and 272PS.
Both are equipped with the new 1.5 TSI engine, an electric motor and a larger battery that now offers payload capacity 19,7 kWh. The new CUPRA Leon thus offers environmentally conscious thrills and an all-electric range of over 100 kilometres. The battery can now be quickly charged with up to 50kW (DC) or at home using a Wallbox 11kW (previously 3.6kW).
The CUPRA Leon VZ e-HYBRID (200kW/272PS) can be equipped with Brembo brakes. Brembo four-piston calipers are combined with larger drilled disc brakes than the standard options (370x32mm), offering increased braking performance.
Context
The power of the new CUPRA Leon goes to the road with absolute precision in all models in the range. In the most powerful versions (CUPRA Leon Sportstourer with 2.0 TSI 204PS or 2.0 TSI 333PS), 4Drive ensures that the right amount of power is always delivered. The latest generation of the electro-hydraulic multi-clutch controls the power delivered to each wheel, maximising traction and performance.
4Drive all-wheel drive technology analyses road conditions in real time, including vehicle speed, wheel rotation speed, steering wheel position and driving style or mode, to deliver power to the appropriate wheels instantly and progressively. Torque can even be controlled between wheels on the same axle thanks to the EDS electronic assist, which locks the wheel that is slipping, helping to minimise torque losses across the transverse axle.
The system is integrated into the rear axle and is located at the end of the drive axle, ahead of the rear differential, improving weight distribution and reducing inertia and reaction time.
The new CUPRA Leon is equipped with an electric brake booster that provides a faster response than a conventional system. It also offers the possibility of energy recovery during braking through the combined operation of the braking system (especially for plug-in hybrid versions) and thus better safety due to the additional systems (ESC and electric brake booster).
Based on the MQB Evo platform, the performance and dynamics of the new CUPRA Leon are achieved thanks to access to a range of technologies.
The front suspension includes MacPherson front knees (standard) and a multi-link rear suspension with springs and shock absorbers tuned to balance the demands for comfort and responsiveness when the ride becomes more dynamic.
With the launch of the new CUPRA Leon, even the 1.5 TSI 150PS & 1.5 mHEV 150PS DSG versions are available with optional 19" diameter wheels. In this case (1.5 TSI 150PS with 19" wheels), the CUPRA Leon is equipped with a rear multi-link axle.
Progressive steering (standard equipment) offers maximum flexibility, connecting the driver to the road via the steering wheel. Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) changes the setting in milliseconds to take advantage of conditions and offer increased driver involvement in the action.
Dynamic behaviour can be tailored to the driver's exact requirements through the different driving profiles Comfort, Performance, CUPRA (for VZ versions), Drift (exclusive to the 333PS engine), and Individual. These profiles change the character of the vehicle - from everyday driving to performance-focused driving. And switching between profiles is now even simpler via the DCC system's slider control. This means you can precisely select the setting you want (up to 15 settings) in Individual mode.
The CUPRA Leon VZ is available exclusively with a sound simulation system that works through the sound system. This is an active system that amplifies the natural sound of the engine (depending on the selected driving profile), presenting a sophisticated version based on a new sound curve, linked to the natural sound as well as to the concept of "adrenaline" (intensity depending on load and revs).
In Individual mode, the "Pure" sound can be selected, turning off the sound simulation system, which adjusts the engine exhaust system valves to maximum volume, achieving an aggressive but 100% natural sound.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The new CUPRA Leon enhances the travel experience with high-resolution displays that show all the information the driver and other passengers need, a next-generation high-fidelity audio system and access to the CUPRA ecosystem via the My CUPRA App.
Behind the CUPRA steering wheel is the digital instrument panel, which is sharp and offers the possibility of different configurations. This means it can display the most important data in the driver's field of vision, which means less distraction and more concentration on driving.
As a wealth of information is provided, it is important that systems are simple to use. Η larger standard 12.9" system screen infotainment is designed for direct access to every function. With a brand new operating system, the adaptive display combines the control advantages of a touchscreen with a touchscreen slider with retro lighting to adjust the air conditioning system and volume. As configurable widgets can be integrated, the infotainment system can be adapted to individual needs.
Thanks to the presence of the Wireless Full Link system, customers can bring their wider digital life into the cabin, be it maps, music or other car-compatible functions, via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Importantly, all functions are accessed in a controlled, intuitive and secure manner via the new CUPRA Leon's human-machine interface (HMI).
When mobile smart devices need charging, the new CUPRA Leon offers wireless, fast charging capability up to 15W, with cooling technology.
With the My CUPRA App, customers have full control of their vehicle (with additional features available for the eHybrid versions of the new CUPRA Leon). In particular, they can remotely control the air conditioning, manage battery charging and lock and unlock the vehicle remotely, as well as many other functions
Connectivity is not just about convenience and comfort. The integrated SIM increases user safety through the eCall service. In the event of an accident, the vehicle can contact the emergency services directly, either manually or automatically. And if the worst happens, the vehicle can transmit important data such as its location, engine type and number of passengers, facilitating assistance.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems & Safety
The new CUPRA Leon offers a wide range of safety and comfort features that increase the confidence of the driver and passengers no matter what happens. A range of built-in technologies that provide support without being intrusive make it one of the safest and easiest to drive vehicles in the class.
Among the safety and comfort systems in the new CUPRA Leon are Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Travel Assist, Side & Exit Assist and Emergency Assist.
Predictive ACC can drive the vehicle based on the route and GPS data provided by the navigation system, allowing speed to be set according to speed limits and road layout - in bends, roundabouts, junctions and residential areas. Based on the data received from the front camera and license plate recognition system, it can adjust the vehicle's speed when the limits change.
Travel Assist uses information from ACC and Lane Assist to actively keep the vehicle in the centre of the lane and adjust the speed to the flow of traffic, across the entire speed range.
Side & Exit Assist technology detects vehicles you can't see that are in your vehicle's blind spot. When you are parked and want to exit the vehicle, Exit Warning issues an audible and visual warning if someone or something is approaching.
Emergency Assist ensures that the driver stays focused on driving and is not distracted by visual and audible warnings. If there is no reaction from the driver, the system can gradually activate the braking system, and if no action is detected the vehicle can come to a complete stop and the hazard lights can be activated. Once parked, the new CUPRA Leon can communicate directly with the emergency services via eCall.
The range of advanced driver assistance systems is enhanced by the inclusion of seven airbags, including a standard front central airbag. The combination of technologies creates an incredible level of safety without interfering with the driver's experience.
The CUPRA Leon also excels in the area of convenience, with systems such as keyless entry - the car detects when the driver is approaching with a welcome ritual - virtual pedal (Sportstourer only), three-zone Climatronic, parking heater, heated seats and steering wheel, electric driver's seat with memory function and a 230V charger in the luggage compartment.
