Ferrari stated 15 years ago that they would not build an SUV, just as 8 years ago at the LaFerrari presentation they stated that they were not interested in electric cars. However, times are changing and so is the Italian company's model range. It is dealing with hybrids and is working intensively on the FUV, the Ferrari Utility Vehicle, since the term SUV is not appropriate for a Maranello creation.
With the success of expensive, high-performance SUVs, a "fashion" started by Porsche with the Cayenne, Mercedes, BMW, Lamborghini and Audi followed suit. Indeed, the demand for ultra-luxury or high-performance SUVs is so great that Bentley and Rolls Royce have also entered the game. And somewhere along the way, Ferrari's perspective changed.
The Purosangue is speculated to be fitted with the 3.9-litre, twin-turbo V8 along with some hybrid technology, as such a setup is more suited to the SUV philosophy, rather than the atmospheric V12 of the 812 Superfast & GTC4 Lusso. We certainly expect some highly impressive numbers, as the Purosangue has to compete with the Cayenne Turbo S & Urus, as well as Aston Martin's newly launched DBX.
As for the design, for now there is nothing beyond some renders, based on what information has managed to leak from the factory all this time, both for the exterior and the exterior.
Ferrari, in order to preserve, at least for now, the identity of Purosangue, uses for powertrain development, some Maserati Levante Trofeo. However, within the next year, we can expect to see the camouflaged Purosangue, since the car is expected to be launched in late 2021, or early 2022.
Ferrari has been criticized from time to time (not that it cares in the slightest) for its decision to create an SUV, but there is no reason not to do so, since it is additional revenue to its coffers and does not affect the rest of its model range. Who would say no to extra money, after all?
