The philosophy of both the vehicle and the drive system of the new BMW M5 Touring is based on a multidimensional driving experience, with the main features being unlimited everyday usability, long-distance capability, exciting performance and all-electric operation in urban areas and beyond. The power transmission via the M Steptronic eight-speed gearbox, the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, the M active differential and the special M chassis technology are precisely tailored to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive system. The new BMW M5 Touring accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and will pleasantly surprise drivers by offering outstanding flexibility and unrivalled precision in particularly dynamic driving situations.
The new BMW M5 Touring will celebrate its world premiere at Monterey Car Week in California, USA in mid-August 2024. The market launch in November of the same year will be followed immediately by the start of production at the BMW Group's Dingolfing plant. The most important markets for the new BMW M5 Touring are Germany and the USA, followed by Great Britain, Canada and Switzerland.
Exterior design: sporty lines, characteristic Touring proportions
Introducing a new interpretation of the distinctive M design, the new BMW M5 Touring clearly expresses its racing-inspired character. A high proportion of body-colour painted surfaces and a black roof finish create a clean look that supports the proportions of a Touring model. Flared wheel arches combine with muscular shoulders and a long roofline to accentuate the sporty appearance of the new BMW M5 Touring while differentiating it from the new BMW 5 Series Touring.
The sculpted front end is shaped by large air intakes and a new BMW M kidney grille design, which is highlighted by the standard BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting. Slim tail lights extending into the side surfaces, vertical reflectors at the outer edges of the rear end and a two-section diffuser where the two pairs of exhaust system outlets are integrated on the left and right emphasise the width and robustness of the new BMW M5 Touring.
The drive system M HYBRID combines a high-spirited V 8 motor with a powerful electric motor
The M HYBRID system in the new BMW M5 Touring combines a high-revving 4.4-litre V8 engine with an electric motor integrated in the M Steptronic eight-speed transmission. In addition to the latest version of the M TwinPowerTurbo technology, the combustion engine also benefits from a cross-bank-type exhaust manifold and an optimised oil separation system. It delivers a maximum power output of 430 kW/585 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm.
The electric motor comes from the latest, fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology, delivering a maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp. It has a rated torque of 280 Nm, but a pre-gearing system - patented by BMW - allows the actual torque at the gearbox input to be increased to 450 Nm. The ability of the electric motor to generate its power instantly and its intelligently controlled interaction with the combustion engine ensure a lag-free response and a sense of linear power delivery at high speeds and at full load. Top speed, which is limited as standard to 250 km/h, can be increased to 305 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package.
The sporty exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps ensures an emotionally exciting engine sound. Depending on the configuration and the selected operating program, the power delivery of the electric motor is accompanied by its own soundtrack in the form of BMW Iconic Sounds Electric.
In all-electric mode, the new BMW M5 Touring can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h. The high-voltage battery has a net capacity of 18.6 kWh, ensuring an electric range of 61 to 67 kilometres in the WLTP cycle. The Combined Charging Unit ensures AC charging with up to 11 kW.
The M xDrive all-wheel drive system, like the electronically controlled Active M Differential at the rear axle, is specially adapted to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive system. In addition to the standard 4WD setting, drivers can also select 4WD Sport mode, in which the M xDrive system sends more power to the rear wheels, via the M Setup menu. Also, by selecting 2WD mode with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system switched off, experienced drivers will enjoy a completely pure-blood experience.
The special M chassis technology with special tuning offers exciting dynamics
With its extremely dynamic features, the new BMW M5 Touring raises the bar in its class. Alongside the powertrain, long wheelbase and wide tracks, the primary role here is played by improved body rigidity thanks to a series of reinforcements, including a bar that joins the wheel arches and the corresponding bars that connect the latter to the front end of the car. The rear section carries model-specific underfloor reinforcements that include a crossbar, a reinforcement plate and other elements in the luggage compartment.
The advanced chassis technology of the new BMW M5 Touring includes a front axle with double swingarms and a five-link rear axle arrangement with model-specific kinematics and elastomotive. The standard equipment also includes the M-adjustable suspension with electronically controlled dampers and Integral Active Steering. The model-specific M settings, as well as the option for each driver to choose his own set-up and to adjust the damping of the dampers at each wheel individually, optimise the connection between the body and the road and help the car to unleash all its talents - from dynamic capabilities to driving comfort. Traction, agility and directional stability benefit from near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology and the networking of all control systems in the dynamic characteristics management system along the transverse axis.
The standard M Compound brakes provide the required stopping power. Like the optional M Carbon ceramic brakes, they are combined with an integrated braking system that offers the driver two pedal feel settings. M light-alloy wheels (20-inch on the front axle, 21-inch on the rear) are standard and are paired with high-performance tires.
Wide range of assistance systems for automated driving and parking
The new BMW M5 Touring comes as standard with a host of driver assistance systems, whose functionality is further enhanced by the integrated braking system and networked management of dynamic characteristics along the transverse axis. Standard equipment includes features such as Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning with lane re-entry with steering assist, Evasion Assistant, Attentiveness Assistant and Speed Limit Info.
As an option, customers can order their car with Driving Assistant Professional which includes Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control, Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Traffic Light Detection and Active Navigation. The also optional Parking Assistant Professional allows parking and manoeuvring control via smartphone from outside the car.
Personalisation of the driving experience according to use
The M model-specific control panel on the centre console offers additional options to personalise the driving experience. For example, the Setup button provides direct access to configuration settings for the driveline, Drivelogic, chassis, steering and braking systems, M xDrive and the level of energy recovery through braking. Drivers can also use the M buttons on the steering wheel to activate two configurations that they have programmed in advance to set up the vehicle.
You can also activate the M Dynamic Mode to set the car's stability control system with a button. The DSC can also be completely deactivated. The M Mode button is used to set the configuration of the displays and driver assistance systems. In the SPORT configuration, the interventions by the assistance systems and the content shown on the information screen and BMW Head-Up Display are limited to the basic functions required for sporty driving. With the optional M Drive Professional, the TRACK configuration is also available. This option too includes the M Laptimer, as well as the Boost Control function, which the driver can utilise when a particularly dynamic boost in driving speed is required.
By pressing the M HYBRID button, the driver can adjust the way the drive system operates. While the basic Hybrid setting controls the interaction between the combustion engine and the electric motor, the Electric mode allows the new BMW M5 Touring to be driven purely electrically. The eControl mode enables efficient energy recovery when braking or maintaining the battery charge at a constant level. M Drive Professional includes the Dynamic and Dynamic Plus modes, which condition the drive and cooling systems to maintain performance at a consistently high level or generate short bursts of maximum power when driving on country roads or on the track.
Innovative cockpit sports car with elements M
The driver-centric cockpit of the new BMW M5 Touring exudes an authentic race-car aura with the newly designed M leather steering wheel, M multifunctional seats, M special displays on the BMW Curved Display and the standard BMW Head-Up Display. The Merino leather upholstery, BMW Interaction Bar, four-zone automatic air conditioning, special M interior lighting with Reception Animation and the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System all contribute to creating an exclusive, premium atmosphere inside. Among the options list are the heated steering wheel, active seat ventilation and panoramic glass sunroof. From spring 2025, customers will also be able to give their car an extra touch of luxury thanks to BMW Individual Metallic Merino leather trim.
The boot capacity of the new BMW M5 Touring can be increased from 500 to 1,630 litres. The standard Comfort Access and automatic tailgate operation allow easy loading and unloading. The maximum trailer load for the optional trailer connection is 2,000 kg.
