First victory for Volvo and Polestar Cyan Racing in the World Touring Car Championship - FIA WTCC (World Touring Car Championship). Thed Björk, at the wheel of a Volvo S60, finished in first place in one of the two races of the penultimate round of the 2016 WTCC, held in Shanghai, China. By happy coincidence, the first WTCC victory coincided with Volvo and Polestar Cyan Racing winning their fourth consecutive title in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship - STCC.
In Shanghai, Bierk started from sixth on the grid and gradually moved up the order, putting in a perfect race. Just before the end, the Polestar Cyan Racing driver set the fastest lap and found himself in second place, behind leader Norbert Michelisz with only three laps to go. An epic battle ensued between the two, with Bierk finally overtaking his rival only on the penultimate corner of the final lap! In fact, the two cars made contact during the overtake, which caused serious damage to Bierk's suspension, but he still managed to maintain the lead and finish in first place, scoring a maiden WTCC victory for both himself and Volvo.
"This victory was very important for us, especially from a psychological point of view. The first year in any form of motorsport at world level is a recognition. To score our first WTCC win in just our first year of involvement is a huge success for Volvo Cars and Polestar Cyan Racing and we are all very excited. It demonstrates - if anything - the potential we have as a team and launches our ambitions for the coming years," said Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Motorsport Director at Polestar.
Next race for Polestar Cyan Racing is the final round of the 2016 championship in Qatar, on 23-25 November.
