With spectacular events, exciting new model innovations and together with its global community, BMW M GmbH is now celebrating five decades of life. On 24 May 1972, the partnership agreement for BMW Motorsport GmbH was signed. Exactly 50 years on, the company - now known as BMW M GmbH - is presenting an exclusive collection of special editions to mark this special anniversary.
With the BMW M 50 Jahre version of the BMW M3 Sedan and the BMW M4 Coupe, M model enthusiasts around the world can express both their passion for racing and their sense of tradition. Limited production editions, exclusive design features and personalised optional equipment options ensure that each version can become a unique car that reflects its owner's personal style.
The BMW M 50 Jahre is based on the current generation of the most successful model series in the history of BMW M GmbH. Around the world, the names 'BMW M3' and 'BMW M4' are synonymous with high performance in the luxury midsize segment. The special editions derive their power from a six-cylinder in-line engine, delivering up to 510 hp, with M TwinPower Turbo technology and a high-revving character. Depending on the model version, power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed M Steptronic with Drivelogic, or fully variable power distribution to all wheels using M xDrive technology.
The exclusive character of the special editions is the result of a market-specific configuration with unique design features and a strictly limited number of copies (in each case). In this way, excitingly rare cars are created for the most important vehicle markets around the world. For the exterior appearance of the special editions, iconic colours from the history of BMW M GmbH are re-released. These are complemented by forged M wheels in similar exclusive colour combinations and striking interior accents.
In Europe and other selected regions, BMW M GmbH is offering an exclusive version of the BMW M4 Coupe to celebrate the anniversary. The two-door BMW M 50 Jahre version is available in the exterior colours Carbon Black, Macao Blue, Brands Hatch Grey, Imola Red and San Marino Blue. Their expressive appearance is highlighted by 19-inch forged M 19-inch wheels on the front axle and 20-inch wheels on the rear axle in a double spoke design, offered for the first time in Orbit Grey Matt and Gold Bronze matt colours.
In addition, a limited number of vehicles of this version for the BMW M4 Coupe are also being built for the Chinese car market and are available in Fire Orange and Stratus Grey exterior colours. This colour choice is related to the fact that the anniversary of BMW M GmbH is celebrated in China, the year of the Tiger. The forged M wheels on these vehicles are finished in matte Orbit Grey when combined with an exterior finish in Fire Orange and matte Gold Bronze with the Stratus Grey exterior paint.
Inside all special editions based on the BMW M4 Coupe, the anniversary is marked by elements such as the "Edition 50 Jahre BMW M" marquee, a metal plate on the centre console with the inscription "M4 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M" and a corresponding logo on the headrests of the standard M sports seats and the optional carbon-fibre M bucket seats for the driver and front passenger.
The special edition, based on the BMW M3 Sedan, was designed exclusively for the American and Canadian car markets. For the 500 examples of the high-performance four-door sports car offered there, a palette of five exterior colours is available, each of which refers to one of its five predecessors: Vermilion Red, Techno Violet, Interlagos Blue, Fire Orange and Limerock Grey. All body colours are combined with forged M wheels in matt Orbit Grey and selected BMW M Performance Parts. Race-inspired components in terms of design and technology, similarly included in the range of equipment available for the anniversary edition, also include the BMW M Performance Carbon front splitter, BMW M Performance Carbon rear spoiler and BMW M Performance Carbon/Titanium exhaust tips.
The "Edition 50 Jahre BMW M" inscription on the sills and the decorative M stripes on the headrests of the front and side rear seats characterise the interior. In addition, an exclusive embroidered motif adorns both the standard M sports seats and the optional M carbon bucket seats on special models. A metal plate on the cupholder cover in the centre console bears the inscription "M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M" and the production serial number "1/500".
