XEV YOYO: How the microcar is made

The XEV YOYO is a young, 100% electric car that is the best proposal for everyday city commuting with unrivalled flexibility, economy and respect for the environment. It belongs to the microcars category (L7e), but it is built exactly like modern full-size cars, so that it fully protects its passengers.

It has a self-supporting frame made of high-strength steel, with safety bars on the doors, so that it offers top rigidity and protection in the event of a front or side impact. The reinforced safety cage ensures the necessary vital space for passengers in the event of a rollover. In addition, the four disc brakes and anti-lock braking system (ABS) guarantee timely deceleration when needed, while Hill-start Assist Control prevents the car from rolling backwards when starting uphill.

Thanks to these features, the XEV YOYO can safely reach speeds of over 80 km/h, allowing the driver to drive even on expressways, and thus placing no restrictions on his daily commute.

Automated production with top quality certifications

The specifications of the top-of-the-range microcar have been defined by XEV's Design Centre in Turin, and it is built in a state-of-the-art 427,000 sqm factory with a capacity of 150,000 units per year in China.

The production line is automated, with on-line monitoring of weld strength for real-time adjustments and corrections, and with 14 fully automatic robots in the painting department. It has ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 quality certificates, and can produce up to 30 YOYO per hour, i.e. one every 2'.

The role of printers 3D in the construction of the XEV YOYO

The YOYO's chassis is steel to provide the necessary rigidity and safety, but XEV has taken advantage of the capabilities of modern 3D printers in other parts of the microcar. In particular, a 3D printer is used to make the colourful YOYO blades decorative parts that are fitted to the doors.

Also, the first models of YOYO were made with a 3D printer in real size, to evaluate the design and come up with the final form. The result is a very unique, youthful microcar, which is now available in 20 countries around the world, from outlets in 113 different cities.
