Two special editions to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the timeless MC12

Two special editions of the MC20 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the timeless MC12 are unveiled by Maserati. These are the MC20 Icona & MC20 Leggenda.

In particular, Maserati's racing vocation comes to life with the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda series, two special editions to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Trident's return to racing - in 2004, after 37 years of absence from action - with the iconic and victorious MC12.

The MC12, which was first presented in a road version and was destined to make its mark on the track, becoming a benchmark in the GT championships, inspired the Maserati MC20 super sports car.

The 100% Made in Italy halo car marked the start of a new era for Maserati in 2020, as the first model to be equipped with the innovative Nettuno V6 engine.

The two special MC20 series - in a limited edition of 20 units each - feature special liveries and exclusive content inspired by the MC12 Stradale and MC12 GT1 Vitaphone respectively.

Maserati MC20 Icona

The colours of the Maserati MC20 Icona bring to mind one of the most iconic Maseratis of all time: the colours are the same as its 2004 MC12 Stradale predecessor, which in turn pays homage to the style of the Maserati Trofeo Light when it raced at the 24 Hours of Daytona, which was the first car inspired by the Maserati Birdcage Type 61, built between 1959 and 1961.

Several features from the Fuoriserie personalisation programme are included in the MC20 Icona Bianco Audace Matte and Blu Stradale paint: special and exclusive details for a refined personalisation. The Maserati Fuoriserie logo in Bianco Audace stands out on the side of the paintwork, at the bottom near the rear wheels, while the logo of the Italian flag is placed on the door below the MC20 inscription.

In the centre of the chrome-plated wheels, with the special Trident design, the wheel covers are silver with the Trident logo in contrasting blue. The brake calipers are also painted blue, the mirrors have an automatic shading function and the bonnet is made of carbon fibre.

MC20 Legend

The story of the MC20 Leggenda also lies in its very name: it features a Nero Essenza and Digital Mint Matte livery to adopt the unmistakable colours of the award-winning MC12 GT1 under the Vitaphone Racing team: a car that achieved the feat of bringing home the record of three wins and two second places at the 24 Hours of Spa.

The MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda celebrate the 20th anniversary of the start of a golden era for Trident on the track with the legendary MC12 GT1: Between 2004 and 2010, it took 27 FIA GT Championship victories, three times wrote its name on the Spa 24 Hours of Spa's roll of honour, and won six Team Championships with Vitaphone Racing and five Drivers' Championships - including two FIA GT1 World Championships - as well as two Manufacturers' Championships for Maserati.

The history of MC12

In 2004, the MC12 Stradale gave a boost to Maserati's racing zeal: designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, with its Ferrari-derived 12-cylinder engine (MC stands for "Maserati Corse", the 12 refers to the V12) it remains the fastest production car Maserati has ever built - top speed was 330 km/h with 0 to 60 km/h acceleration in 3.8 seconds. Only 50 of these were built.

Today, the story of these triumphs and of a car that embodied Maserati's sporting spirit and its DNA dedicated to excellence is reflected in the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda, as if representing the passing of the baton between father and son.
